For me, Hagler gets a decision, his pressure and great chin gets the win. Not a complete shut out over Canelo perhaps but no controversy.
Precisely how I see it,Fergy. As good as Canelo was/is there are n't many who would beat a prime and motivated Marvin Hagler throughout Middleweight boxing history. Sugar Ray Robinson and Carlos Monzon are names who come to mind but I can't think of anyone else.
Are we allowed real judges or Canelo judges? Close fight but i think Haglers southpaw jab and right hook will pose problems for Canelo. I don't think Canelo has fought a southpaw who can punch like Hagler. However, Canelo's outstanding chin, head movement, power and punch variety (he throws every punch in the book for an orthodox fighter) should make this a very hard fought competitive affair. Hagler UD 12, 7 rounds to 5 or perhaps 8 rounds to 4. Lots of great back and forth action.
Eh - Maybe Canelo by a close decision? Not that Canelo is as good a boxer but because he’s 175lbs. We never saw Hagler at 175lbs, today he’d be 147lbs easy. Weight classes aren’t real anymore, we can blame Mustafa for that in 82?
I can't either Stevie, tbh. Maybe I'm biased cos he was my eras middleweight champ but it would take someone REALLY good to beat old Marv.
Canelo at ‘160lbs’ would probably have been coming in the ring at like 175lbs. Yes it does matter and it matters a lot. Edit: That being said, there are certain fighters where the skill would make up for it, he’d beat Barkley, a more modern example being contenders like Lemieux etc, but the top guys like Canelo, Golovkin, Toney, Jones etc would be too much when you combine the skill and weight advantage.
