Jeffries didn't like to wear hand wraps, whether this contributed to his injuries I don't know. we know big punchers like Fitzsimmons and Max Baer were plagued with hand problems,Ali ,who wasn't a big puncher was too, maybe his originated from pounding the heavy bag?

Griffin did all he could to last the distance and take the prize money. He was not interested in winning that is very clear.

Ed you must have went to a lousy college. I have degrees in chemistry and economics and I'm cleaning your clock. Get back reading some of those old textbooks on American history.

Was baseball respected/respectable in 1900 ? Was it illegal ?

Was it often lumped alongside prostitution, gambling, whisky, lewd entertainments etc. by reformists and puritanical crusaders of the day?

    Mcvey, Mcvey, Mcvey,

Jeffries offered Johnson a private fight, Johnson refused.

No comments on Jeffries giving African American Griffin a fight as champion? Gee why am I not surprised!

I have read reports that said Hart hurt Johnson with body shots. I can look for it.

In the mean time this report says he hurt Johnson in the 11th round. Ready and stop the bigotry!

    Quote:
Marvin Hart was awarded the decision over Jack Johnson in a twenty-round contest last night that went the limit, but he came far from demonstrating that he is qualified to meet Jim Jeffries. Hart was game and kept boring into the big colored man all through the fight. Johnson's much-vaunted cleverness did not count for much. While he was able to hit Hart frequently, his blows did not seem to damage the white man from Kentucky. The sympathies of the large crowd were openly with Hart, who was at the short end in the betting, and every lead he made at Johnson, whether he landed or not, was greeted with cheers. Hart managed to deal the only effective blow in the eleventh round, when he landed a right swing on Johnson's jaw that staggered the black man and nearly knocked him over. Referee Greggains stated that he gave the decision to Hart, because all through the fight Hart did all the forcing and leading. According to Greggains, if Hart had not pursued his tactics there would have been no fight, as Johnson merely contented himself with countering. Hart's face was battered to a pulp, but Johnson's blows did not seem to have much sting to them. Johnson did a great deal of uppercutting, but Hart covered up and the blows did not seem to hurt him." (Washington Post)
There are no reports of Hart hurting Johnson in their fight you say? Good lord you are ignorant.

John L Sullivan should not talk about fighting black fighters.

As for using the color line to avoid talented black fighters, Johnson > Jeffries by a good margin.

    Any more facts needed here?

    Tony, Tony Tony,

You're so predictable. After getting your clocked cleaned with information you shut your mouth and go to the only place you have left the race card.:lol::lol:

You just can't admit you're wrong when I correct you for the 99th time.

Par for the course for a coward, a welcher, ( The bet was Fitz vs Ruhlin filmed, it was you dumb man! It was filmed! ), a racist and a liar. But at least you learned a few things like Marvin Hart hurt Johnson.:lol::lol:

By the way, Jeffries was the lineal champion and did offer Johnson a title shot.

Did boxing ever have a scandal or conspiracy as far reaching as the Black Sox?

My point is that the sporting world, in general, was rife with corruption. As soon as there was a singe penny involved, crooks and mobsters were figuring out an angle.

When does any professional fighter accept an offer for a "private fight" against the worlds champion? Why even bring something like that up to support your argument?

I don't think two old farts should get into a puerile bragging contest on the internet,

    so whatever.
