OK apparently this is a very tough job, what type of matches do you like to see...... I'm going to use one of my good mates as an example of what I consider poor match making here. Matty Askin was due to fight dickenson for the English title and in a final eliminator and somethings happened- so Askin has stayed on the bill and they've matched him with some dude called Atilla Palko. Palko is 12-1 (10KO's)... is he good? Who knows, we'll find out next week- or will we? Because this guy might be the future undisputed heavyweight champion of the world- or he might last 10 seconds. Either way barring a spectacular knockout Askin might benefit from ring time but he's not going to gain anything in the way of Kudos. Either he beats or no mark, or God forbid he loses and suddenly the guy becomes credible. I don't see the sense in these matches- if there is no form or familiarity then imo the matches are largely pointless. What are your thoughts on match making- what should matchmakers consider?
The Dean Powell formula: "Have they been stopped?" "Never!" "Can they punch?" "No!" "Is he in the same weight class?" "Nah, he'll come up though"
Dean Powell at work Dean's phone's ringing it's FW 'Hello Frwank you ok mate? what's the problem' 'Dean what's happening with Mitchell's opponent at York Hall i got him belling me at 4am telling me he wants the fight sorted this week or he might go and get himself arrested again' 'Well leave it to me Frwank i'll find someone pal, okay! tel la' *Dean wonders over to globe in his office spins it around whilst eyes are closed and stops it on Africa!. Coincidence? nah a closer look at Globe shows that there is only Africa on globe* He then mulls through Boxrec looking for criteria of -Never been stopped -Low KO Ratio aka Pure Boxer Bonus There from Accra in Ghana, place of Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey.
Every single one of Boxrec's P4P top 25 Ghanaians is from Accra. Number 26, Emmanuel Clottey is from Bukom
Atilla Palko was (11-0) unbeaten until he fought the Congolese-French beast that is Youri Kalenga (9-0). I picked him in the boxrec stars of the future thread, he is a wrecking machine & won via 1st round tko, dropped Palko twice & battered him round the ring. http://sosoboxing.com/boxing-video-watch-online/kayembre-kalenga-vs-attila-palko/ I like Askin & he should beat Palko but if I was a matchmaker I wouldnt let him walk down the same side of the street as Kalenga.
Just read the 'explanations' here http://www.wboboxing.com/wbo-explanation/ - number 12 at heavyweight for example. #12 Kubrat Pulev (13-0) UKR This content is protected Won an eight rounds decision over Maksym Pediura (13-1-1) on Jul. 16, 2011. TKOed Derric Rossy in the fifth round on May 7, 2011" These god-awful 12-1/10-0/18-2 fighters are created on assembly lines in Italy, Hungary Georgia, specifically for this purpose. Palko plays the role of Maksym Pediura.
Matchmaking is like politics. Smoke, mirrors, luck, bluffing, counter-bluff and just as everyone starts to understand that, wool is pulled over your eyes. If you pedal the same line over and over again, some people will take it as fact. See: Jeff Thomas getting into Prizefighter.
