Max Baer made his first and only title defence against Jimmy Braddock, and the rest is history.

The sequence of events that led to Braddock being the challenger was very complex, and by no means inevitable.

Not much has to change for any of the following men to be the challenger instead:

    Max Schmeling (rematch)
    Steve Hamas
    Primo Carnera (rematch)
    Art Lasky

How would you see these turning out, and what might the ramifications have been?

The only one I see beating him is schmeling. If baer comes in overly confident seeing as he's already beat him, then schmeling could take him on points. But the strange thing is, if he were to meet Louis in a title defence then I see Joe beating him. I don't feel that Louis would have underestimated max challenging for the title, so imo Joe would have ko'd schmeling around the 8 th.

Schmeling was never going to get a rematch because.
    1. He was to dangerous an opponent
    2. All the anti- German bias you deny that surrounded him. Baer has his hands full in a rematch Schmeling was on a roll ,but Baer wins once again by late stoppage.
Carnera ,off his performance against Baer did not warrant a rematch, neither would it have been sellable to the public.Fight 2. Baer cuts out the clowning and turns the trick quicker this time 7 rds ko, or surrender.
Lasky had not won any of his last 3 fights and had been comprehensively outpointed by Braddock in his last one so not a viable contender. He was stopped by men that did not have anywhere near Baer's dynamite .Baer stops him inside 8 rounds.
Hamas had been retired for 3 months after Schmeling ko'd him so he is a non runner!

We are assuming different match making decisions on the part of these men, i.e. Hamas not taking the fateful Schmeling fight, and taking the Lasky rematch that he was offered instead.

If everything stays exactly as it was, then he naturally ends up fighting Braddock.

Then you are assuming Hamas beats Lasky and ,since their fight was extremely close and controversial, I'd like to know on what you base your pick?

"Joe Agnello scored 6 rounds Hamas 4 rounds Lasky. Harold Barnes gave each boy 5 rounds. Cavanaugh cast the deciding vote, taking round 4 from Lasky because of a backhand blow. Lasky's manager filed an official protest with the New York commission when Cavanaugh later admitted he'd erred."

If their rematch had gone ahead as intended, one of them would have won baring a draw, and that man would likely have been a shoe in to challenge Max Baer.

I therefore offered scenarios where both of them challenged Max Baer for the title.

We can thrash out all the possible scenarios, or you can just take my word for it.

Baer did not train for Braddock but there is no doubt Max could be outboxed. It's very possible in shape or not he falls to Braddock.

Baer, in shape, probably beats the other four proposed challengers as they did not have the wheels to stay away from his right hand power.

I'm sorry, I wouldn't take your word for it being Thursday unless I had a calendar to verify it.

As usual, you have to drag your trashy attitude into every thread.
The guy looks like he's is trying to work with you on this topic, and you've already become combative...

You keep demonstrating that you are a mean spirited old fa rt. What did you not understand about "possible scenarios", you do understand what a scenario is, right. Another rathole from a well know cheese eater..
