Anybody who saw the trinidad fight knows that Trinidad barley tapped the body that whole fight. The minute he did, Mayorga was down. Cotto would work it from the opening bell until Mayorga was left on the canvass. Cotto by KO in a slugfest.

Good match up as i'm a fan of both guys. Hard to pick a winner here because mayorga, crude as he may be, is one tough/rugged guy. Dude was one of the hardest punchers p4p in '02-03 when he was at welter. There's also the fact that cotto's been rocked by chop chop, torres, judah etc.. none of whom bring the heat mayorga packs. But then again, from the judah and torres fights, cotto showed a lot of grit and veteran savy, digging deep and stopping his man. Mayorga is'nt exactly known for his stamina so i'd probably say cotto makes adjustments against the wild swinging mayorga and win by late stoppage or decision after a scare in the early rounds.

Mayorga is crap! He caught Vernon with some wild crazy unorthodox **** he wasn't expecting, from that point on even in the second fight vernon was intimidated and should have easily outboxed the bum.

I don't think this is close. Mayorga troubled Forrest because Forrest doesn't like fighting in close quarters, and Mayorga could come in wildly and walk through the Forrest jab to get inside. Against Cotto, he would have the wider more off balance punches, and I believe we would see something much like the Trinidad fight, only to a greater degree.

If Cotto try to come out and slug, Mayorga by KO.

Yes, It would have been easier for Tito if he had done that, but this fight was at 160 not at 147. Mayorga who fought Tito at 160 was not even close in physical conditions than the Mayorga who fought Forrest at 147. Forrest fought the best of Mayorga when Mayorga was in his best physical conditions and his best weightclass,

Mayorga did not have the skills to beat Forest, but he did it.

Do you think that Cotto would have defeated Forrest at that time? How do you think Cotto woud have performed if he had fought Tito at 160?

Mayorga did great against fighters that headhunted. Cotto would not make that mistake. As soon as Mayorga stopped and stuck out his chin, he'd feel a thud on his kidney.

Even now, I would LOVE to see this fight

    How about now?

  11. Prime Mayorga vs. Prime Cotto would be a SICK fight.

Mayorga was such a ****ing beast at 147... His skills may not have been first class, but as we all know, skills alone do not a champion make. Mayorga had other assets that elevated his game way beyond other supremely gifted athletes. These include brutal power, fast feet, good reflexes, tremendous chin, unquestionable heart, and HUGE BALLS. The kind of balls you bow down before. The kind of balls that will beat many top opponents of today into submission.

After he was robbed against Spinks, Mayorga lost his passion for boxing. What a shame.

Personally, I would have the early 2000's Mayorga who trained hard enough to make 147 (Cruz, Lewis, Forrest twice, Spinks) to bruise up Miguel and stop him late. Just an all around horrible matchup for Cotto IMO.

Prime for Prime, Mayorga UD or mid-late TKO. Anything other then primes, and I think Cottos skills and dedication take over and he is able to win a decision against Ricardo.

When considering these two fighters, I have it as such.

    Prime Mayorga > Prime Cotto
Any other Mayorga < Any other Cotto
Also, legacy and all time standing obviously goes to Cotto.

Two of my fav fighters of all time. Cant wait for the press cons.

    Very good post....

I remember reading before the spinks fight in a Mayorga interview how he wanted to retire soon, he said he had been fighting his whole life and he wants to hang them up and spend time with his family (not something normally coming from Mayorga, I know)

I think that was one of the last fights he came in with an honest to God hunger.... and its no surprise it was his last fight at welterweight.
