You don't understand, I'm saying YOU'RE ****ING WRONG. People obviously loved Louis after destroying Schmeling, it was a symbolic win for america. Yes Louis was on a leash thanks to Johnson, but that doesn't mean he wasnt loved by the public as a whole. Have you read any of the boxing writers reports on Louis from the era? Have you talked to any of the old white dudes on classic about how he was treated during the time?

Have you read about his WWII exhibitions were whites in the army tried to segregate any blacks from even watching him fight? Clearly he had white fans and support before Schmeling II ever happened. Not everything is black and white. His talent and appeal was great enough, like Johnson's, to break the color line despite the prohibitions of the era. He was clearly loved. You can see it in the receptions of his immediate successors, Walcott and Charles... Who despite their own excellent and ATG skills and resumes were largely shunned like Tunney was after Dempsey. He was very, very popular among boxing fans, and not just the black ones.

Joe Louis was so popular that my family in Fiji listened to him fight Baer and Braddock and others on ham radio.

As for ray robinson.... People were obsessed with him, he was a national phenomenon, a businessman who was received like an artist even in foreign countries. He won father of the year awards and tons of accolades from the establishment despite beating the **** out of his wife on a consistent basis, ****ing boatloads of white women, etc etc etc. He was not received in the same manner as Floyd Mayweather Jr.

This is not to say that both Louis and Robinson were not hated by a great deal of the white establishment, but to say they weren't loved by the overall public including whites is absurd.

    Look aT YOUR FIRST SENTENCE

"People obviously loved Louis after destroying Schmeling"

The key word here is "AFTER" if it wasnt for that he wouldnt be as revered like he is today.

Your ****ing wrong in general but bring up a couple points that are correct.

    LOLOL

First you quoted Rick Sanchez. Rick Sanchez!!! 17 year old can do his job.

Second, I love the irony of you criticizing the media and yet quote one of the worst example of mainstream media.

It is like hating white people and then quoting David Dukes.

During the time those fighters were not exactly liked there were other black boxers that were loved.

SMH. You're missing the point. The topic wasn't about how he is received today. People today don't know **** about Louis, who he fought, how he fought, his skills, nothing. The topic is his reception during his time.

Yes he would. You don't understand that Louis was well liked in the 30's even before his FIRST match against Schmeling. His knockouts of Carnera and Baer garnered him huge media attention, from black and white press. He was the most exciting heavy since Dempsey and people were paying attention. Even after he lost to Max the first time around, his comeback brought him to the title and even greater popularity with W's over Sharkey, Farr, Pastor, and James Braddock.

Schmeling II is his most historically significant win and probably what he is most remembered for today. But that in no way means that it defined his popularity at the time.
