Winky was used to be one of my favourite fighters. Funny thing is, he was well known in the UK in the 90s with wins over Bingham, Foster and Dodson. I seem to think FW was his promoter then (could be wrong). It seems looking from the outside that Winky wasnt as well known to Americans until the Vargas fight but I dont know that for sure. Winky looked good when he was the first person to beat Dodson. I remember watching the Wright/Simon fight when it happend and at the end the fight was called a draw, later changed to a MD win to Simon. The commentary never spoke to Wright and I was interested to hear what he had to say afterwards. I remember it was a very close fight where I could see an arguement for either fighter. I felt Taylor deserved the decision against Wright, though because of how Taylors career has gone, many will look to rewrite history. Wright deserves alot of credit and praise for being willing to travel as champ. Winky Wright a true champ
Winky Wright has never been involved in a professional fight in which he can legitimately claim to have been the victim of a robbery. The fights that he lost or didn't go in his favour were all close fights that had a **** load of swing rounds. If you're too stupid to not acknowledge swing rounds, then you don't have any business scoring fights in the first place.
i thought he whipped taylors ass as a whole but in terms of rounds 8-4 winky all day. **** what anybody else says lol. i thought 7-5 winky against vargas but it was really close. its jus too bad dude hit about as hard as the magic man :/
I'll assume you meant Malignaggi and not Tarver. :yep The bigger blacker Magic Man was no Earnie Shavers, but he sure wasn't feather-fisted like Snooki's twin brother. I think Winky rates somewhere between the two in p4p punching power. :think (then, so do most average-to-light-hitting boxers...)
Which Money? :huh Jesse "Never Earned No Money With Gloves On, Except His Stipend From Uncle Sam" Lucero? I mentioned him.
I feel for Winky because he was on the end of some bad decisions. But he made some dumb decisions in his career also. Sitting on the sidelines waiting for a big fight to land in his lap has to be his biggest bonehead move.atsch Allowing fights to pass him by because of money is another. The Taylor rematch is the fight he should have done everything in his power to make happen and he missed out on it because of money.atsch That was when his career stalled and he never really recovered, fighting only sparingly and losing every big fight there after. I don't even know if he still fights now. He never announced a retirement. Poor forgotten *******.
Heh, I have no idea. That's the only amateur match I've seen with him, and probably his best win. Johnston didn't make any marks internationally either. USA sent Skipper Kelp 1989 (worlds), 1990 was an off year and by 1991 Vernon Forrest had taken over the weight class in the US. Internationally Tszyu had Zülow moved into the class around that time and the Cuban was old but still good. Can't remember many others but it would have been very difficult for him.
