The Mercer that fought Lewis would probably stop Wilder. He had improved his skillset at that point in his career. Ray Mercer developed a nice jab and put his punches together better than he had before. Mercer had good power too so he may take out Wilder.

Wilder is a great athlete and he is strong. I don't dislike him but I don't like the way he fights. He doesn't seem to want to set up the power like he could. At 6-7 he could dominate with that jab and make his fights easier. Maybe he will improve and be a good champion.

I`m pretty sure Tommy Morrison was a contender at the time Mercer knocked him out. He also fought Lennox Lewis to a controversial decision which could have went either way. He showed more in that fight that we have seen from Wilder. He was bringing pressure to Lewis and walking through Lennox`s powerpunches while landing his own. He outjabbed Lennox Lewis.

Not saying Wilder couldn't beat him but if there`s hype it`s with Wilder.

Mercer had an exceptional chin .. he took flush bombs from Morrison, he took massive shots from Lewis ( less robust than Buster Mathis but still a beast ) .. we all know Wilder can crush but I'm not sure he can be automatically called a bigger puncher than a Lewis yet ..

Morrison wasn't rated as far as I know.

He rightfully lost against Lewis. It was a close fight, but I generally don't assume a boxer would beat someone based on a losing effort. Mercer had a tendency to look good in defeat and crappy in victory.

I do get your point but I think there is a bit more to it .. Morrison was fighting the best fight of his life for the first few rounds and Mercer took massive shots .. the fact that he kept his cool, took the shots well and won in spectacular fashion was impressive .. He was losing against Damiani and came back late and stopped him with a single shot, a huge come from behind win .. he fought gallantly against the best Lewis. I don't think Lewis ever had as tough a fight that he won. He lost a close one to a pretty motivated Holyfield .. then he did look flat and out of shape a number of times but he did have more than one or two memorial wins ..

To me, the Damiani fight was fun to watch, but he also was being outclassed so it isn't too much of a positive for Mercer if you're matching him against other fighters.

I also don't think Lewis was at his best. It was only a ten rounder and Lewis hadn't beaten a serious contender since losing to McCall. He was basically regrouping.

Well if I remember correctly he was post McCall 1, super focused and under Manny Steward's wing .. he was pretty near the top of his game and certainly in shape for a huge televised fight at MSG ... as far as Damiani , I just think any time a fighter comes from behind with win by definitive KO it's a big win .. I am not saying Mercer was an all time great though ..

Way to beat Mercer is to box him. Wilder has shown he is no Larry Holmes.
Mercer is a meaner younger version of Oritz and finishes what Oritz couldn't
do . Mercer ko in 7.

This wasn`t Lewis at his best Steward hadn`t quite smoothed him out yet, the punch Lewis knocked Weaver out with was as hard as anything Wilder threw.

No Lewis got a lot better after this, he hadn`t reached greatness yet.

Mercer was way past it by the time he fought Wlad, it was years after this.
