The Middleweight Division today... There has been several threads bringing up the MW division at the moment so wanted a thread to clear up all debates. At the moment we have - Martinez - Considered the champ due to following a magazine rating system giving him the Ring title, holds the WBC MW title and former (not lost in the ring) WBO MW champ. 7-0 in MW title fights Golovkin - Many feel is soon to be the man at MW, has the WBA MW title and is 11-0 in MW title fights including interim Sturm - Been around for a while, is the IBF MW champ and former IBF WBA WBO MW champ, is 16-3-1 in MW title fights Quillin - The WBO champ and 3-0 in MW title fights Now the debates - 1. Who of the MWs has the best resume - For me it is debateable between Sturm and Martinez. - This content is protected beat Pavlik, Williams, undefeated Barker who would go on to win the IBF MW title, undefeated Murray WBA Int champ, undefeated Dzinziruk former LMW champ, undefeated champ Chavez Jnr WBC MW champ, Macklin - This content is protected may not have quite the name wins but overall has beaten Sylvester who would go on to win the IBF MW title, Velazco WBO MW champ, Cherifi, Schenk, Castillejo WBA MW champ, Macklin, Zbik (who some felt beat Chavez jnr, Barker IBF champ with various other MW contenders Its debateable between Quillin and Golovkin. As an overall you could say Golovkin who beat Macklin after Martinez and Sturm but for an individual win Quillin beat undefeated N'Jikam. I think I would go for Quillin next based on that close win. 2. Who would win in if they were all matched? Tough to say. Martinez is not a massive MW and like Sturm, is getting older. Would Quillin or Golovkin have the seasoning to beat either? Styles make fights. I wonder if Sturms large MW frame and physical strength could see him win this. Golovkin has power that scores KOs. I think Sturm could possibly do it. Discuss
Big gulf between the top 3 and Quillin, who is quite ordinary apart from being big with excellent power. Are you suggesting Sturm beats Sergio and GGG? You wont get much support for that view. I'm a Sturm fan but i think GGG probably beats him at this stage.
1. not sure 2. Golovkin you know it yourself Bailey. no amount of scientific analysis can give a different answer Calazhe - GOAT @ 168 GGG - Current Greatest @ 160
if martinez beats cotto and then fights and beats GGG, he will be considered the best MW hands down and can end his career on an all time high
GGG is so far superior to ANY MW of the last couple decades it aint even funny. if he was to fight every MW fight hops had he guaranteed be undefeated and i would bet my house he would had destroyed hops. i think he would have had a chance at the tko but hops back in his prime did have a very good beard and he knew how to hold like no other but i think with the fact hops wouldnt be able to hurt him GGG would be ALL over him and finally make him crack.. bring on the hate, its how i see it and GGG is the MAN
Good summary, and your analysis is spot on. Neither Quillin or Golovkin have faced the tough opposition that both Strumm and Martizez have. This may work in the favor of the younger two because they are fresher and have not been in any wars like the two veteran champions. I'd be interested in seeing a match between anyone of the four versus the weak contender. Strumm and Martinez have stepped up. Now I'd like to see Quillin and GGG do the same.
The comparisons are appropriate, the top 2 of the old guard with some very solid defences against well established names, and the two up and comers with the big KO records but less than elite resumes. Sturm has the greater longevity at the top level, but has lost a couple of fights he perhaps should have won. OTOH Maravilla has by far the two biggest wins (if one of course discounts the fact that Sturm is thought by many to have beaten DLH) but has fought merely solid opposition since 2010. Of course there are some drect comparisons to be made, but they are less than conclusive (Murray and Macklin). One has to go with Maravilla despite Sturms greater time at the top of the sport - the Williams and Pavlik wins are significantly more impressive than anything (DLH aside) on Sturms record. GGG vs Quillin is also not immediately clear - in spite of N'Jikams belt and some decent wins, Macklin was still generally regarded as the better fighter - though perhaps Hassans Gallocentric career played against him. Aside from that they have the common opponent in Rosado - well we kinda saw how that worked out...Quillin beat Brinkley whose only significant achievement was beating Stevens and Guerrero who didn't actually have any significant achievements. How you rate beating up on the ghost of Winky Wright is down to you (he'd fought just once in the previous 5 years) but it ain't better than stopping a somewhat past best but still active Ouma. The others? Stevens (in spite of the Brinkley loss) Proksa, pretty much better than anything Quillin has done. Ishida not so much...but still a guy who'd been in with some decent names without being stopped. Nah ..I gotta go with GGG on this one (I am partial towards GGG but I've tried to be fairish). TBH it's gonna be difficult for Quillin now with the promotional difficulties -in a way he's probably gonna find it even more difficult than GGG to get the top fights - a lotta guys ain't directly unable to fight him, but the action's on the other side of the fence and he ain't getting the push that GGG is. Kid C probably has to do something exceptional now to close the gap with Golovkin EDIT - Oh yeah, part 2. Hmm although Styles make Fights we have a coupla common opponents in Macklin and Rosado. H2H it's difficult to pick against GGG right now, specially with Maravilla aging. It's impossible to place them in ordr without knowing right now how Sergio is going to return, but speculatively I'd go.. Golovkin Martinez Sturm Quillin
GGG is the best right now. He fights decent to top level competition on a regular basis and destroys them. He is a dream for the real fight fans. These other clowns either fight in their own backyards or once every year. I don't see anyone at MW really challenging him. I think we are seeing an exceptional talent and we should sit back, be appreciative, and ENJOY!
