Did you guys feel that he belonged in that weight? Or did you know that sooner or later a good middleweight would school him.
No, he and Hoya were small men at that weight. Hopkins still ran from Tito as if he were facing Tyson though.
trinidad was just as good a middleweight as he was a welterweight, the only problem trinidad faced was that he struggled against boxers. he moved to 154 to fight vargas and he gave him a beating, and when he arrived at middleweight he looked unstopable against joppy. but oscar, hopkins and winky knew that he could be outboxed, and all 3 of them showed that he found it difficult in fights when the fighter just doesn't stand in front with his chin waiting to be hit. if trinidad fights a brawler today then i believe he has the power to KO them, but fighters such as roy jones know that he can be outboxed.
He was still using his illegal handwraps against Joppy. I truely believe Tito's power was overrated due to that. Look at his fights after the illegal handwraps was taken away...his power wasnt nearly as destructive as it was previously.
i think he could have stayed comfortable at 154 for a lot longer, but middleweight is a glamour division with higher wages. He did win a version of the title against Joppy so wasnt a complete flop, but welter/light middle were his stronger divisions...
That's also something I will always believe, and I've said as much here on this forum. No question in my mind.
tito never once HAD to move up he never had weight making trouble back then he moved up to chase the big fights,he clearly wasnt as effective at mw his record there is 3-2.
Tito was great at Middleweight and had he come up maybe a little while after he did and came up to fight taylor instead of hopkins he would be have been the man at middleweight no doubt about it, that being said Hopkins ran from Trinidad for 9rounds like he was fighting(as somebody previously stated) Iron Mike, he didn't want to stop and actually fight Tito until after the bell rang for a single moment in the first 9rounds. To the people who say Tito used illegal hand-wraps, really? you honestly believe a story made up by Hopkins camp, There is a high-standing person in the state athletic commission that watches fighters get there hands wrapped and their gloves put on(pretty much everything up until they get in the ring). Its just not feasible, and how come he had such great Power against Roy Jones to force a natural Light-heavyweight back to the ropes and make thumping noises when he landed? does he still use the illegal hand-wraps(what about the Mayorga fight, this was right after Hopkins camp publicly claimed Tito had illegal hand-wraps, surely somebody would've been watching him?)
he was a dominant ass welterweight. i dont think the handwraps meant anything. but he met harder comp in mw and it was harder for him to carry the weight. still a legend but to do that and be successful is VERY difficult
The way he took out Joppy proves you wrong and I never heard that he had issues carrying the weight either, he wanted to be there and looked amazing there against Joppy.
I think Tito did good and could still do pretty good up to 154lbs. Not a pound more. Tito is tall but he has a skinny frame. Just take a look at his legs. He is soon to be 36 but a few guys older than Tito have already proved its possible with hard work. But Tito got comfortable and lazy(CANT BLAME HIM). Tito's punches output started to decline a couple of fights before the BHOP fight. BHOP (older) was throwing 3 punches for every Tito's punch. Tito still saying he will fight in 2009. I say; if he does @ 147lbs or lower its OK. Anything else would be crazy. By the way, I expect ODLH to show a SUPREME condition for the Pacquiao fight.
