The more I revisit Calzaghe-Kessler..

Did you post this to defend Kessler as a fighter or defend Calzaghe's "legacy"?.

 

I'm probably the only one here who thinks that Calzaghe-Kessler was the most important fight in 2007 in terms of boxing history AND I'm not for the UK or Denmark (or Italy) at the same time.

I watched the fight once again just today and it was still very impressive and exciting from start to the end. The way the two fought satisfies an old school boxing fan in every way. I've seen that fight more times in the whole length than the two Vazquez-Marquez fights (the 2nd is my choice on FOTY), the Pavlik-Taylor war or the great Mayweather-De La Hoya match-up (joking on that one) and that tells you something.

What haven't changed in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. viewing is my opinion of the two. I still think that Joe is P4P#3 and Kessler will beat the hell out of the rest of the SMW division. Me, Manny Steward and Dan Rafael seems to agree on that.



What I can tell you now that this fight was one the most important in the division history, the guys – undefeated, unbeaten, untouched - were among the very best and it just turned out to be one of the most exciting fights in the division history with absolutely mesmerizing skill level from start to finish. Maybe in neither aspect was THE greatest. But all combined, that was the most memorable SMW clash in history. Only time will tell that, but I can tell you the same thing a few decades earlier. :rofl

The only thing I missed in that event was myself cheering for the better man to win among the great crowd of 50.000. :huh

 

I gotta disagree. I think Pavlik is the truth. His fights against Miranda and Taylor were impressive because of the way he fought. He didn't just land a lucky punch. He imposed his will. He's a guy who forces you to fight. And he will take your shots and fire back. And he will continue to fire. He has good boxing skills, is fundamentally sound, has power up the ass, has great stamina, an iron chin, and a high work rate.

Pavlik is the truth.

 

168 will never hold a historical significance like 160.

 

Kessler has extremely good defense and his timing is propably top 5 p4p. Kesslers speed is way underrated as well.

I agree that Kessler didnt have a plan b against Joe - but Joe is just a boxing phenomenen who adapts to everything and still dominates. But dont start the BS about Kessler being a b+ fighter. He's A level - and if he had a decent promotor he could go as far as top 3-5 p4p.

 

Maybe, but who cares?


In it's own history, this was something special, and if you don't see it's significance you probably watched something else when it was on the least-watched HBO event of it's championship boxing history.

I have no desire to talk about Calzaghe/Hopkins as I have stated in another thread. I've made my prediction in the official prediction thread & will stand by it.:good

 

If Kesslers an A level fighter, I cant see it. Is he a good Super Middleweight, definitely, is he a great, far from it IMO. He has good power, decent hand speed and workrate, and average foot work, and pretty good chin, this doesnt add up to great Middleweight, I think a B+ is a fair rating.

 

He also has very good foot work too.

Kessler is the truth. Watch the tapes. Watch his fights. Look at his style.

Joe is extraordinary but he was at a point close to loose his game against an injured yet very fit Kessler. Also - Joe had a huge style advantage and Kessle was there the entire 12.

Kessler actually could beat Joe in a rematch. I just dont think so.

 

I agree that it's the most significant fight for 168 but I still dont see it as being that significant overall if I'm honest. I still feel boxing would be better served without divisions like 168 & a prestigious talent like Calzaghe's would have been better displayed in other divisions.:good

 

I think one poster on here put it excellently (can't remember who): Kessler beats Joe once or twice out of ten times. Which is more than you can say for pretty much any other contemporary in his weight range. :good
