I know many in the classic believe that the introduction of new weight divisions was bad for boxing. What i am curious to find out is what division do you feel were the most necessary. Which division do you feel best aids the disparity between the two original weight classes that it is sandwiched between?

Well definitely the first to go should be straweight or minimum weight whatever the hell you call it.... Even Jr fly seems funny but there are some small guys that cant fiil out to fly on junk food(Ricardo Lopez) and a number of great Jr flys so i guess they should keep that one.

Crusier seems like that would have been a great one.. .. But im suprised the division has never put out a number of elite fighters, As you would think there would be.. Seems like a common size for lot of natural atheltes that ive known , as well as great hw from the past that would be to small for hw today(Louis,Marciano,Dempsey,Walcott etc etc).. .. Would think a perfect division for strong guys but yet still have speed . WOuld think it would attract enough guys athletic guys who were too small to the take it to the next level in (football/basketball).... THe division is solid right now but, for the most part has been one of the worst division.

You would think JW wouldnt be the one of the most needed.. But i think it is., justt look how soliid the division is,,, We would have missed out on a few great champsif not for JW... Pryor,Chavez,Tszyu migth have grabbed a belt at WW belt , but never would have been the Man .. As neither of those guys could have beat the number 1 WW of their day... Mjaybe Chavez during Brown,Mcgirt days but thats a big maybe.,, JB has had a few special fighters but the ones in recent years have all gone up and done well, Tapia,Nonito,Vic.

    Would

Most of the smaller weightdivisions could go IMO:
    - minimumweight
    - jr. flyweight
    - super flyweight
    - superbantamweight

Superfeatherweight and lightwelterweight are around for a longtime, at least since the 30s, so they have some historical significance and should stay IMO. Supermiddleweight was a good idea IMO, the ideal weight for guys like Jones Jr. or Conn but since most of the good guys there would move up to lightheavyweight anyway I think that one could go too. Cruiserweight wouldn´t be necessary if fighters today would know how to make out of a size-disadvantage a size advantage, like Marciano did for example, but be it as it is, I think cw makes some sense these days.

So, for me it should be the original 8 plus sfw, lww and cw. 11 divisions instead of 16. Sounds good to me. Than one belt per division and boxing would be in much better shape since each division would have more talent and the best would have to fight the best to get a title shot.

    All of them are necessary.
Weight classes are there for a reason.
Unless all weightclasses bar none get canceled , and only catchweight fights take place , which is not a bad idea.

The most necessary is the least appreciated, Cruiserweight ..

I'm not sure they are entirely necessary, most could fight comfortably in 1 of the old divisions. The real reason is more champions and more money. I mean look at some of the division today, they are completely dead, ie 130lbs

Well Chavez and Pryor could easily have stayed at LW, Tyszu has the win over Forrest so it's not a given he couldn't compete at 147lbs and would you rather see him against Delahoya, Mosley and Forrest etc or Mitchell, Judah and Old Chavez etc?

Not really, anyone who's any good has looked to move up a division and Toney, Byrd, Haye, Gomez have all moved up without a problem

Owing to the ever increasing size of heavyweights,I'd say the Cruiserweight division.

I used to think CW was necessary but to be honest i think those guys did a lot for the HW's... Forced the bigger dudes to come in shape and focus on stamina and dexterity. I think the bloating of the division(be it with weightlifted and roided muscle or with tubbolard) is a result of the CW division existing

maybe over 220 or 225. if this ever does happen, i hope it's still just called the heavyweight division for historical purposes. maybe the new division can be called the super cruiser or something like that.

I think 168 is a good stepping stone division.

I think the common consensus is cruiser, which i would agree with.
Funny how it's always been unpopular though.

My favorite of all "junior" divisions is juniorwelter...so I say that's the most "necessary".

    Here's a quick question.

How many fighters would you consider all-time greats that only held a title in a non-traditional\junior weightclass?.
