 overrated for what? his 46-0 record, his great awkward style or world title belts in 2 weights. Behave
Can you really argue with today's boxing fan ?Most boxing fans only value a fighters last few yrs ala Manny's fans ..They will then let the media fill in any additional info like where they started and then thats how they come up with the conclusion as to how great they are ! Its a flavor of the month type of thing ..Joe Calzaghe will go down as arguably on of the best super middles of all time ..But let Larry Merchant say something negative and all of a sudden his word is gospel and we should rank fighters based on his opinion !
Mayweather has tremendous skills to go with his undefeated record. And though he is accused of ducking once or twice in his career, generally, he's got an average resume with some great names on it. And unless he loses (highly unlikely since he's said to go on another 2 year break..) in the next few years, it would be quite unfair to brand this special one-of-a-kind fighter as grossly overrated. Prime Roy Jones, Jr. was a hell of a gifted athlete with an unorthodox style that puzzled even his very best opponents (bhop 1 and toney fights). Though accused of not pursuing the very best opponents available during his prime years, his stellar performances and remarkable accomplishments(having to go high up to win the heavyweight title) have likely earned him the 90s bwaa fighter of the decade award. He received a lot of flak from critics when he got kayoed several times late in his career but can’t be that overrated imo since he was already obviously past prime when those severe losses came. Bhop is nowhere near the word overrated if we talk about accomplishments and skillset. Fought solid competition, had a record of 20 title defenses for 10 years and unified all major belts and became undisputed middleweight champion. On top of that, his sleek style allows him to remain an active solid fighter even at an overripe age of 45. He's had a complete fighter's career. What more can one ask? Rocky Marciano is a solid ATG who was one of the highly touted heavyweight legends, revered by boxing fans of his time because of his no fear all-out slugging style. And though undefeated by the time of his retirement at 32, his resume is average at best having fought a pretty decent opposition with a few old, past prime big names to boast of. His resume would have been way better if he chose to continue and be competitive for 2-3 more years. All ATGs for sure but of the four, I would consider the brockton blockbuster to be the slightly more overrated fighter considering his relatively high ranking on most atg lists. History has judged him pretty kindly I must say. It has become somewhat a requisite for a great fighter to be heavily criticized first and accused of being overrated by boxing pundits before gaining wide acceptance, long after their storied careers are over. But as they always say, that's just the way the cookie crumbles..
hopkins is one of the options on this thread and he was ranked 4th p4p and joe c beat him. he also fought all mandatory challengers and kept hold of his belts for 11 years.
I agree. When you regularly see threads such as Prime Hagler v Prime Hopkins and the vote is about 50/50 then you KNOW Hopkins is horrendously overrated
Hopkins is a good shout. A lot of people seem to forget that he lost twice to Taylor who is now a "glass jawed bum", just because he came back to beat Tarver and Pavlik and have a somewhat close fight with Calzaghe.
