When he was motivated to fight, he was a really cagey hard to hit defensive fighter. Even out of his prime he was still hard to hit a bit, the first Sam Peter fight I think was his last hurrah as a cagey fighter, after that he was easier to hit.

:rofl Of course he is, but everyone hates him, so he will never get his due respect.

I was not really a Whitiker fan, but I respected his skills. I really wanted to see him fight Rosario instead of that cheating Nazario who head butted a win on Rosario. I also wanted to see him fight Camacho and Taylor. He was not a good fighter, but a great fighter.

I doubt it, it wouldve been a competitive fight -- however, to be honest, Mayweather emulated Sweet Pea a HELL OF A LOT in his really really early fights.. watch his debut and earliest of fights LOL.

    It wouldve been competitive.

I agree not in the same league as Pea but there's about 3 guys I would put there in the same league as Pea so it's not a huge list.

In his first incarnation, Clay/Ali was awesome.

E.g., see CLay vs Liston I.
Say the first Rd, Liston couldn't even land to his body.
Till the liniment in his eyes, Liston could hardly touch him, even with his great jab.

Of course he is. I just meant that I didn't think he was top-3 like Pep, Locche and Whitaker. ymmv. Obviously Floyd is one of the greatest defensive fighters ever.

Floyd is hit more but he has a lot more pop. I find him more exiting to watch because he can actually hurt his opponents. But he is not nearly as slippery as the Wisp or Whitaker

I'm gonna go ahead and say it: Andre Ward is one slippery mother****er....I think on the level of any other throughout history. However, Whitaker stood southpaw and had his own personal style of slipping punches, which I actually consider to be an art. He could use minimal movements to make his opponent's fists catch maximum air. It's beautiful to watch. Very few fans appreciate good defense, in any sport really.
