Imagine a fighter around 170 pounds that beat a prime Jeanette, Langford, drew with a coming Wills, beat the best light heavyweight champion of the 1905-17 era, Battling Levinsky, the best white hope champion Luther McCarty, and the best black light heavyweight of the era Kid Norfolk plus numerous other good wins, with few damning defeats in well over a hundred fights, and we are in Greb, Langford territory and he NEVER gets a mention here. I think he is top 100 heavyweight on resume, probably P4P too, any takers?
I can kind of see what you mean… on close inspection Jeff Clark's resume looks much more impressive than the bare numbers would seem to indicate at first glance! 27 of his 40 defeats came against HOFers, and most of those towards the end of his career… and, as you say, he beat several of the top men of his time. Definitely a pretty good, and underrated, boxer!
Education and entertainment at the same time. This is one of the main reasons I read the Classic. Thank you lads.
Roscoe Toles was a good fighter he fought Joe Louis in a bout where if I Remember rightly Louis stopped him and for years was listed as an official bout- but because of a technicality about Louis not being able to have an official bout prior to facing Primo Carnera the bout was officially labeled an exhibition. Somebody have info on this it’s been long time. For me I think Johnny Risko is underrated - yeah he only has about 20 more wins than losses in over a 100 fights but out of the 100 fights he was stopped only 3x. Once in his final bout. Only Schmeling really handled him and it was fight of the year if I remember. He had wins over Baer, Loughran, Schaff, Godfrey (some say Godfrey had the cuffs on), Sharkey, Uzcudun, and other familiar names of the era. He fought big punchers like Baer and Retzlaff multiple times apiece and couldn’t be stopped. For me he is more impressive than Chuvalo who gets way more coverage and should have someone really look into his career. He fought a who’s who of the late 20s early 30s
