I don't think West judged a Kariuki fight, and i don't think he was judging fights before he retired. Fair stab in the dark though.

Whisper his initials so no one else hears them.

Was'nt Tosca a world kickboxing champion though , and Barkley had definetly left his good days behind.

    Correct and correct.

But a pretty amazing effort for your second pro boxing bout none-the-less.

Still racking the brain on Leon's question even after having had the initials discetely whispered.

11th April 1969, I was fifteen, sitting at Festival Hall with my brother at ringside, watching Guiseppie Bertoochi fight Stretch Anderson over fifteen rounds for the vacant Light Heavy title of Australlia (I would eventually fight a bloke who won the eight rounder on that undercard...)

Guiseppe hammered Stretch for most of the first seven rounds....Stretch seemed to be overwhelmed by Bertooch, and it was looking liked a fate accompli, that Guiseppe was too powerful, and would beat Stretch easily with his big bombs...but fate suddenly stepped in, towards the end of the seventh round, long- limbed Stretch timed and combined a beautiful left hook and right cross which connected with Guiseppe sweetly, and it was nighty, night for big Guiseppe...and all over red rover, the canary birds flew into the ring and hovered over Guiseppe Joe, as the ref counted to ten and could have counted to twenty...Strech won the Light Heavy Aus Championship....(there was much dissent over this Aus title that was set up by Stadiums....many other contenders in other states felt left out.....I see that Stretch never defended that title.)

Here's a classic one that makes me laugh a little.. Willingness, shocking preparation, sheer bad luck, and the consequence of all three coming into play.

An Aussie Champ lost his National Title on the scales. When weighing-in to defend his crown, he was found to be slightly.... 13 1/2lbs.... over the limit. Sure, it had been a few years since the champions last defence, but rules are rules.

The 'contender' for the title and 'NEWLY APPOINTED' Aussie Champ, having been crowned without lacing on the gloves for the privelage of a fair and decisive victory, agreed upon the continuence of the bout going ahead... to provide entertainment for ticket holders, promoters, and old fashioned 'fair play'.

As it was, the 'NEW' Aussie champ broke his right hand in the 7th round.... and had to retire injured.... Never to defend the token title belt again.

    Who were the two fighters???

Gotta feeling the guy with the broken hand was Kiwi born - but it's been a long week and the brain simply 'aint working - hopefully more will come.

Criptic clues.. (first name) The overweight champ (title loser) is found in a health food lovers garden...

(Last name) Found in the Catholic church parting the choir boys hair; or on a chess board.

    Two questions remain unanswered:

1/ Leon's question - even though Sox has whispered the guy's initials - perhaps you better solve it for us Sox.

2/ Bobby's question - even though he has offered crypic clues which still haven't seemed to help with a solution - perhaps an era? or a weight division would help?

    Tosca could certainly handle himself.

It's a pity there's no footage of the Barkley bout on the Net, but this later bout against Adam Watt is certainly worth a look.

Watt gets the points but have a look how close to done Watt was as well:

    Nice work Sox.

Now we've got to solve Bobby's little curve ball.

Any chance of an era Bobby?

(make sure you have a look at the Tosca v Watt video - it's a belter of a fight and the 3 earlier parts of it are all on Youtube)
