I'm just going to come right out and say it: Hagler vs Hearns is an overrated fight, and we've all just been programed to go around calling it the greatest fight of all times... I rewatch this fight about every 6 or 7 years, most recently about a week ago, and I always come away with the same opinion. Now, I will admit, you can't really compare the matchup itself to many others in history. Neither guy was undefeated (but being undefeated wasn't as big of a thing back then)... But both guys were superstars at the top of their division, both relatively close to their prime, both with monstrous reputations, and a nice clash of styles as well with a championship on the line... You really can't top that in a matchup, and I think that aspect overshadows a lot of the fight itself. But as for the fight itself, it really just comes down to the first round for me. It was a furious round, but Hearns was finished by the start of the second, and the fight was pretty average from then on and pretty sloppy I might add . As for the first round action, of course it was great action, but nothing i haven't seen before. I've seen plenty of little guys go at it from the opening bell, and throw with great hatred and intensity, but still land more punches with more accuracy. I really did enjoy this fight, but I feel it gets exaggerated quite a bit, it's certainly not one of my all time favs to pop in the vcr on a rainy day. I can think of about 40 other fights right off the top of my head I'd rather watch
Hagler-Hearns was one of the greatest fights ever in my opinion. Not THE greatest but certainly one of the best in my lifetime. I would pick quite a few others above it,though. Even one or two of The Fab Four's - such as Duran-Leonard I & Leonard-Hearns I. I do agree with the poster that it was all Hagler after the first round.
Lol I feel the same. I feel like it’s the casuals favorite fight…cool fight but no fight that short could be the greatest not even close.
I thought it was a fantastic fight and one that I’ve watched over and over. But there were probably better fights in boxing history
Hey just imagine Hag/Hearns being like Rosaro-RamirezII. Hearns is Rosario. Boy it would be worse than it already is with acclaim
In defense of Hagler v Hearns, when you watch and re-watch a fight as a stand alone, knowing the results, with really no involvement in it, it can lose its luster. I watched this live on a telecast from a grand arena with several friends who brought more friends. We had been talking about this fight for weeks leading up to it until it was at a fever pitch. The crowd was divided on who they liked and the atmosphere was electric when that first bell went. Man, we were keyed up and the first round put us into the stratosphere. When the round ended we were all looking at each other incredulously, saying redundantly, "Did you see that?" So I think in this case, like probably many fights, one has to look at the moment in time and what it may have meant to you.
I should add on top of my previous point I don’t think it’s just casuals favorite fight but there’s a large group in here who are Fab Four fanatics. None could do any wrong or Lose any fight to those die hards I can see it being your favorite fight. It’s your favorite fighters going at it. But besides them a lot of casuals always mention this fight to me like they’re bringing up some lost piece of film with the greatest fight on earth on it. To each their own I suppose
