The Myster of Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by AmericanPsycho, Aug 26, 2011.

  1. Why isn't Sergio a huge draw? He's Latino, an explosive action-fighter with speed, skills, killer performances, and model good looks (no homo). There were empty seats at Dzinziruk and I expect more of the same at Barker.

    :-(

He needs to be promoted better and should get a big money fight, him beating up chavez jr would be a good start, also cotto or may/pac would be ideal to get him in the spot he deserves to be.
Its unlikely though, dude is too small for 168 and avoided at 160 because he isnt a huge draw, ends up wasting his time fighting a pointless fight like barker just to stay busy.

He's only just hit the big time after the Pavlik, Williams wins. Fighting euro fighters Dzinziruk and Barker were imo poor choices to capitalise on his new found fame in America. He's probably stalled that momentum he built up now. He was too busy worrying about trying to get a fight with the Pacquiao's and Cotto's, he and his management, and I suppose HBO dropped the ball. I don't know who he could've fought instead, but Barker and Dzinziruk just don't cut when you're aim is to attract more fans and attention in order to get bigger paydays

Agree with what you've said here, mate.

I think the fact he doesn't speak much English (if it at all) is a factor holding him back in marketing him effectively in the US market. Which non-English speakers have been massive draws in the US? Tito would be one, but he had the huge PR population in the Eastern States backing him, so somewhat of an outlier really. Oh, and Pacquiao of course, but Pac is well, Pac.

Bit of a shame, especially as his window of opportunity has maybe a couple of years more left to run.

dzinziruk wasnt that bad of a win actually, I still think he is one of the best guys at 154 and he outjabbed the guy who many people thought has one of the greatest jabs in boxing.
He looked very good in a fight where many people thought he would win but dzinziruk would make him look bad.
It doesnt do much for him when it comes to becoming more famous though.
He should date a famous model or actrice that might get some interest:p

He doesnt speak English. His best wins are beating an alcoholic white guy and a guy that hits like a *****. Oh and he is afraid to go up in weight and get a big fight. Number 3 is the biggest he needs to go up or stop bitching. This clown is asking to fight chavez Jr. Or people he weighs 20lbs more than. The guy is a joke right now. But I think he is a good fighter.

that has nothing to about weight. I think we all know Chavez Jr is not ready for him and nobody is going to set up that fight. You did see the OR part right?
