manny ran from the fight after issuing a long list of demands right? He ran from one floyd request!! Tim bradley, signed a contract with arum again. Martinez, ggg, are scared to fight ward right?
Void is still running from Pac and he always will because he is afraid. If Void ever gets' the nerve to fight Void he will get his arse kicked. Void is a legend in his own mind...........
I get your point. I too feel boxing has lost it's allure over the years. Then again, I'm not a young kid anymore. I grew up watching the likes of Roy Jones, Tyson, Holyfield, Toney etc... The fighters who made the sport so popular and worth watching in the 90's. Until the mid 2000's, when my favorite fighters got old and started to lose more than win. It's a hard pill to swallow, but you need to let go of the past decades. In our minds, nothing or no future fighters will compare to staying up late on a Saturday night. HBO theme song blaring from the living room, Jim Lampley hyped up as ever and Larry Merchant rattling off another story that has next to nothing to do with boxing. I guess what I'm trying to say is. I love boxing, and have since found fighters to get excited about again. I still look forward to watching the likes of Mayweather, Hopkins, Haye, Ward etc... We may never see another Tyson, but it will be something for us to tell our kids that we grew up watching one of the most exciting fighters of all-time.
That's a good post. And don't get me wrong, I follow the sport diligently, and watch every weight class and am fortunate enough to be able to watch fights from all over the world. But, we really don't have any true superstars anymore, and there are way too many so-called great matchups that don't get made for one reason or another and the sport seems as mired in b.s. as it ever was. There's just too much bureaucracy in the sport nowadays, and too many b.s. belts, too many fights ending in controversy, etc. It's just hard to stomach some days.
Basically what's happening and it's took a long time with the effect of the split alphabet titles the chickens are finally coming home to roost. Alphabet title holders now just want to protect their belt and if apprpriate their "0" by fighting nobody's and bums. I don't want to sound like my grandfather but in the old days with 8 weight classes and 1 belt holder basically champions couldn't hide, eventually they had to fight the best guys. Fair enough some ducked and dived then and some good men didn't get a shot, but on the whole the big match ups were made. Also most of those guys wanted to fight the best and establish a legacy. I'm seeing fighters holding world title belts now who wouldn't have been near top ten ranked contenders 30 or 40 years ago and beyond,Ricky Burns is a prime example. There's 2 lads from my area Stuart Hall and Martin Ward fighting for the IBF World Bantamweight title at the end of this month and this is a prime example. Two good honest pro's but world champions? I bet most on here haven't heard of them. I don't like to say it because they're local lads and some might give me a bit of stick, but once again they wouldn't have been near a world title shot years ago.
Manny v Floyd again, eh? This is not the 1st "great fight" to never materialize and it won't be the last. There is plenty of blame to go around. With the accusations, lawsuits, Hitler comparisons, etc. it's gotten to a personal level it never should have. To the usual suspects, don't kid yourselves, Manny has had plenty of chances to make this fight happen. Walking away from OSDT (with a 14 day cutoff) and a $40 million dollar offer isn't small potatoes.
While I agree with most of what the OP has to say, he is forgetting for the moment how great the Barrera-Morales and Pacquiao-Marquez fights were. We didn't get Pac-Mayweather but we still got those and people take them for granted. And he's assuming that boxing only has room for two stars at a time, but what about Cotto, Martinez, Marquez, Hopkins, Klitschko, and Ward? Do they not count? What about Donaire, Alvarez, GGG, and Froch? How much money or how many pay per views do you need to be a star? It really depends where you are on the globe when we talk about who's a star and who's not too. In the Philippines Donaire is a super star second only to Pac, and tens of millions watch his fights.
