Wlad landed several clean uppercuts in that fight. I will admit however, that he doesn't use that punch much if at all in other fights. Vitali has a very good, uppercut/cross punch that he uses frequently and with much success.
He started boxing at 20. How good technically would he have been? He would never have reached title level.
When Peter was doing that abymsal Joe Frazier impression in the first few rounds, Wlad looked very uncomfortable. If Peter had better technique on the left hook he would have landed a lot. It's a shame Peter has atrocious stamina and was effectively done by round 4. Only when he was totally and utterly exhausted did Wlad throw an uppercut on the defenseless Peter.
I just proved he can and he throws uppercuts. He did throw them against Thompson as well. And peter was not fat in that fight like he wasnt fat every each of his fights either. Wlad before getting beaten against Sanders had one the best if not the best offensive arsenals ever by these super heavyweights. He did throw short punches, went to the body and the head with combinations. It just he has mastered the current style of fighting tall and taking less risks with help of Uncle Tom. However I agree Wlad is poor fighting inside but that really is not what you need to beat guy like Tyson.
Size wins, that why boxing has weight divisions. If you look at the record of Foreman, Ali, Frazier, Shavers, Liston, Chuvalo and Bonavena you'll see they were for the most part feeding on the smaller heavyweights and also L.heavyweight division. George Foreman was 6'4" 220lbs, but his average opponent was 6'0" and just either side of 200lb. In fact they averaged 198lbs.:hi:
You are talking some hypothetical **** here. What about Wlad calculating accurately to use his footwork and jab and paw with the jab to stay out of range and keep Peter at bay.
I don't think it's hypothetical to suggest that more technique would improve effectiveness. I think it's just basic sense.
Its no coincidence that a lot of the smaller fighters mentioned in this thread boxed in an era when there was not a cruiserweight division or when the limit was at 190 lbs.
I agree. The problem is he is so big an strong and he has grabbing down to such a fine art that it doesn't matter. If a guy gets close, he holds. There is nothing a 6 foot tall 218lb heavyweight can do in that situation. Tyson was a great offensive fighter but the one guy who was strong enough to hold him up close was Bonecrusher and Tyson was unable to stop him or do anything effectively on the inside, he did all his work coming in, and that is where Wlad is as his best, as you come in, where he hits you with his telephone pole jab.
Wrong about Foreman. He had almost 50 fights in his prime and about 13 or 14 of his opponents were under 200 pounds. Lyle was 220. Norton was around 215,Frazier was 215 and 220 in the rematch.
