It's easy to bully someone who, out of respect, doesn't hit back and Sergio Maravilla Martinez' career has 'disrespected' written all over it. The fighter who once was stopped by Antonio Margarito only a few years after he first put on the gloves, worked his way up over a decade to finally become someone - someone huge. But it doesn't seem the FOTY award, the P4P top3 position and the World MW Championship comes with respect.

Martinez earned his WBC LMW shot years back but the Green Mobsters preferred to go through with DLH-Mayweather and not let Martinez fight for the belt once Floyd vacated - instead Vernon Forrest (RIP) took on washed up Carlos Baldomir and refused - and wasn't forced - to face Martinez.

At the end the WBC did strip Vernon not long before the tragic incident, but the 'gift' of interim champ Martinez becoming the full titleholder is well documented in that legendary croocked fight vs. Kermit Cintron where the WBC ref changed a KO decison (full 10 count) to a headbutt due to the direct order of team Cintron and after 12 rounds WBC judges robbed Sergio from a clear decision victory.

Sergio was jobbed once more in a close MW fight shortly after vs. Paul Williams (about 75% here think Martinez won) but as a pretty terrible match-making from Kelly Pavlik's POV Martinez got his big chance and said ENOUGH WITH THE BULL**** and beat the World MW Champion, 18 pounds heavier, to a bloody pulp. The ref couldn't job him and the judges couldn't rob him on that night.

And just when you though he earned respect, the WBO, after throwing a party for Martinez who did charity in Puerto Rico, stipped the champ awarding the belt to Golden Boy fighter Danny Jacobs (who ultimately failed to capture it). And when HBO wanted Maravilla-Williams II, Team Punisher played the hardball with the Argentinean refusing to discuss any deal unless Williams gets 1) most of the money 2) be the lead in the promotion 3) selects judges 4) selects the ref 5) announced second and 6) fights out of the champion's corner, and after the opening round Martinez clearly won, he was already behind on two cards.

But the moment of magic shortly followed and the Argentinean taught the powers of boxing a devastating lesson not to underestimate the outsider just because he doesn't follow the script. He crushed the script, grabbed he Fighter and Knockout of the Year awards and punched his way up to the group of the absolute elit with Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Respect earned, right? Well HBO and WBC think otherwise. HBO forced a LMW champ (Dzinziruk) on Martinez or no fight and in the meantime, even though Sergio said he'll rather fight interim champ Sebastian Zbik then to get stripped, the Mexican Mobsetrs quickly took the WBC title away from the champ as Top Rank's Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. said he's interested in Zbik. That's all Jose Sulaiman needed to hear and now Martinez is champ no more. (I bet they will give him some Champion Emeritus or Champion Disrespected status which is utterly pointless and valueless other than the expected sanctioning fee).

But the WBC made a huge mistake putting Zbik to full champ. Not only they lost the very best fighter on the planet who doesn't cherry pick, they pretty much lost any remaining credibility as the boxing world won't just move on and say 'oh politics'. They ****ed with the wrong Argentinean as we stand behind Maravilla, and every time he'll do his magic inside and outside of the ring, we'll laugh and the WBC will be ashamed that they are not part of it. Mobsters don't fit on the screed with such a genuinely good guy.

Only a few month ago Martinez spent days in Mexico at the WBC HQ, paying his respects to the organization, having a long and friendly discussion with Sulaiman, doing charity, visiting hospitals, saying prayers advertizing the green belt all the way, but it just took a single phonecall or text message from Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and thanks for the memories Sergio, but make the ****ing way for the Mexican hypejob!

    Excellent post

  4. Martinez is still p4p number 3 and the peoples middleweight champion, this doesnt change anything. He would beat anyone at 160 and below. Its now easier for him to make good big money fights. They always try to **** him over, its really disgusting.

I dont get why they just gave the other guy the belt and atleast not make it vacant and have the other people fight for it to determine the winner. I mean come on that is ******ed, this is john ruiz type **** happening

  13. Its really disrespectfull if you think about it. Martinez is a great champion and good person as well.
He fights the best, doesnt duck, is humble and keeps smiling even when they screw him over. He was fighter of the year in 2010 and has worked his way up the hard way to get where he is now.And they screw him over like that. WBC has fallen deeply with this move in my regard.

He's one of the world's premiere fighters at the moment, and a thoroughly deserving recipient of all Fighter and Knockout Of The Year awards going. He's the king of the middleweight division in the fans' eyes just now.
