Positives-Defeated five top 10 hws in his last six fights (including 4 ko's). One of the elite pure boxers today. Maintains distance as well as anyone. Intelligence and ring generalship. Great power and handspeed. Incredible footwork and movement. Best jab in the business. Best overall offense and defense in the divsion hands down. Hasn't been touched by a meaningful punch in 2.5 years. Wants to fight the best out there. Stamina has improved greatly.

Negatives-Too tense and robotic. Chin will always be an issue. May lack the in ring confidence and killer instinct to become a great.

    Contenders

    1-Nikolai Valuev

Postives-Size and stamina are biggest positives. Effective jab when opponent stands in front of him. Looks to have a great chin but has not faced a top notch puncher. Maintains distance well. Decent workrate. Good inside uppercut. Active fighter.

Negatives-Very little power for size. Slow feet and hands. Very hittable.

    2-Ruslan Chagev - WBA champion

Postives-Excellent power left hand. Can loop it over the top or shoot it straight. Good chin. High defensive gurad. Decent foot speed. Above average handspeed. Very intelligent. Controls distance well. South-paw. Some head movement.

Negatives-Weak and lazy jab. One-handed fighter. Stamina. Workrate. Doesn't throw many combinations. Backs up too much and can be physically bullied. Inactivity. Choice of weak opponents. Size.

    3-Oleg Masaev - WBC Champion

Positives-Excellent power, two-fisted skill, stamina, aggressive style, good workrate. Vareity of power puches from different angles. Heart.

Negatives-Chin will always be a concern. Age, injuries, inactivity. Lacks effective jab. Very hittable. Slow hands and feet.

    4-Samuel Peter

Positives-Very heavy hands. Incredible heart and will. Has sharpened up punches and become less reckless. Good workrate. Excellent left hook. Good jab when he throws it. Aggressive style. Can still take a good punch but no longer unshakable.

Negatives-Consistency in training. Ego. Does not know how to maintain distance well. Pourous defense and susceptible to uppercuts and hooks. Very sloppy at times leading to wide punches. Dirty fighter. Doesn't throw the right hand enough. His singing :yep

    5-Alexander Povetkin

Positives-Incredible workrate. Agressive style. Very quick hands and solid foot movement. Excellent with hooks. Heart. Fights harder when tired. Big upside.

Negatives-Size. Comes forward in a straight line. No head movement. Cannot fight going backwards. Must be set to land effectively. Lacks explosive power. Prone to swelling and/or cuts. Lacks effective jab. Very hittable. Chin untested against big punchers.

    6-Sultan Ibragimov

Positives-Excellent foot movement. South-paw. Has become hard to hit. Excellent power left hand which he can loop over the top or throw it straight. Good two-fisted skill. Solid chin. Wants to fight the best.

Negatives-Size. Very low workrate. Throws wide punches. Weak jab. Fights timid and can be bullied. Very hittable against a counter-puncher. Only effective inside.

    7-Vladimir Virchis

Positives-Size. Big Power. Throws straight punches. Chin looks solid. Need to see more of him.

Negative-Very slow with feet and hands. Doesn't throw combinations. Must be set to fire. Looks to be a limited inside fighter. Workrate.

    8-JC Gomez

Positives-A pure boxer. Very skilled. Need to see more of him.

    Negatives-Conditioning and dedication.

    9-Tony Thompson

Positives-A poor man's version of Wlad. Size. Good jab and right hand. Awkard style. Need to see more of him.

Negatives-Lacks power. Robotic. Slow afoot and average handspeed.

    10-Fast Eddie Chambers

Positives-Excellent handspeed. Excellent straight right hand and jab when he throws it. Awkward style. Very straight and crisp punches. Chin looks solid.

Negatives-Huge size disadvantage. Terrible workrate. Stamina. Very little foot movement. Stands in the pocket too much. Hittable.

    Thoughts?

i should have just said swelling but cutting is probably somewhat related. chambers hit him w/some straight rights and he had some nasty swelling. he looked like a raccoon by the end of the fight :nod

I think Sam Peter is the ranked number 2 Heavyweight in the world by Ring magazine, after he brutally knocks out Maskaev he will be the number 2 guy in everyones opinion, who isn't a hater.

if he stops maskaev in impressive fashion, i would probably move him up to #1 ranked contender or at worst #2. no doubt ahead of chagaev.

    Good thread! Well done job,kobe!

    Gomez:pure boxer,very skilled,poor conditioning and dedication

You have summed it up very well, kobe!

Just one comment: Povetkin has faced the who is who of the amateurs including big punchers like Timurziev who would probably blast most of the top10 pro fighters out of the ring within the distance if he fought at the paid ranks.
    Povetkin's chin isnt untested.
And who is really a big puncher at the pros? Sam Peter who didnt dare to cross Povetkin's shadow at the amateurs? Tua who has gone the full route with guys who were knocked out by unknown cruiser weights before or after Tua has faced them?
The totally one-dimensional and predictable Virchis who desperately needs a stationary target?
