The next great heavyweight might be emerging in the amateurs right now!

I watched Damiani the other night. I was impressed. Good boxer, solid combinations, good instincts. That broken nose against Mercer ruined his career. Damiani could have given holyfield a difficult time.

 

I agree he did have some very good skills, but he lacked real power and other intanibles. he was giving Mercer a boxing lesson before getting craked huh:yep I remember watching Stevenson,Biggs,Damiani all fighting each other back when they use to put the Big amatuer titles on regular TV "Wide world of SPorts".

Damiani might have botheed Holy and stold a couple rounds but he would be able to handle the Heat Holy would bring, remember Holyfield was great at adapting to his opponent. He would stop Damiani in the md rounds. I think it was Akinwande that but a whupping on Damiani on some big under card i believe it was Tyson/Holy I ??? ( to lazy to check boxiing records right now

 

I have to admit i was shocked when I saw how real Damiani's skills were. The man was a very good boxer. You know me too, I love italian boxers! Damiani was the real deal though.

Good Point about holyfield's pressure. But Holy did seem to be bothered by holmes boxing ability, and i felt a younger talented fighter like damiani could steal rounds off holyfield with his elegant boxing. I do think holy would break him down at some point in the fight.


Damiani seemed like he was wasn't the same fighter when he fought Akinwande...no?

 

One more thing..Mercer looked so much fitter leaner healther better at rock solid 215lb against Damiani in 1991 than he did at a fat 238lb against Lennox Lewis in 1996. Why did Mercer let himself go?

This is a great fight. very underrated. Two young studs in their prime..I think this fight took a bit out of both of them. Checkout the way Damiani mixes up his combinations to the body..vicious.

 

Despite his weight for those fights i felt that Mercer got it together and took boxing more serious after being embarrased by an old Holmes,and Journeyman Ferguson. IMO Mercer never looked better than he did in close losses against Lewis(I had it even)and Holyfield he seemd to box more . During the early to mid point of his career i just though he was aHyped up wild clubber with an amazing chin. He really showed that he had some very good skills to go along with His Good power,and Super chin. I forgot what the exact nature of him making changes was?? I knew at time?


As for Damiani, Akinwande its kind of hard to say, i mean Akinwande had a bad style for Damiani who no matter how good he was wasnt going to out jab Akinwande who had a reach like a telephone pole. I remember more of a case of Ankinwande just looking better than he ever did or would. Akinwande was exciting in that fight and i though hed be a threat at the top, but that guy went back to being a boring hugger after that fight. Akinwande seem to have some potential, but ended up being a big dissapointment.

 

I disagree. Povetkin owned him in the amateurs and Chagaev in the Am's and early pro was definitely athletically gifted as well as being a better boxer.

I thought Cammarelle was a Police Officer in Italy.

 

The only problem is that when he was in a war, he lost.

 

Have you seen the fight vs Stevenson in the amateurs? Damiani was nice there.
