In this current era of soso HWs, with only Wladimir and Vitali fighting and handily beating the best of the competition, where and who is the next GREAT HW. I have seen this kid fight, and he looks like the real deal. Granted, before Wlad, I was all about Michael Grant, so my judgment is not always the greatest. But I predicted Lennon Lewis before Tyson went down to Buster, I picked Foremans rise back to power, and I stood almost alone when Wlad won gold and I called him the next HW great. This new kid is called Robert Helenius, and it seems as he might be lacking pure punching power, but his jab looks real good, and he throws hard str8 shots ala a Klitschko. When I watch his fights, he looks a lot like a young Vitali. Fluid and sure of his ability. Im keeping my eye on him. I think right now, he is top 20. Give him 5 more top 20 wins and he's definitely top 5 in the division.
Wlad is basically the Larry Holmes of our time, he's dominated because the other competition is so weak, but at the same time he is clearly a very gifted fighter. Had the HW division had more captivating fighters in it Wlad would be much more highly regarded. Unfortunately history probably won't be kind to him, his early losses and later reign as champ against lesser fighters leave alot of room for debate about good he actually was. You have to realize that for a heavyweight champ to be considered great, he has to be both a great fighter and an icon. I hate to say it but the next great HW is probably going to have to fit the mold of an up and comming Joe Mesi (+ a chin). By that I mean he'll have to have power, an entertaining style, have to be a reasonable size person, doesn't have to be white but has to have an appeal, and be under 30.
How can ya'll not be impressed by Helenius. Right now Wlad is the best. Vitali is # 2, and imo Valuev #3. Helenius is like 12/0 and won't be able to make a title run for another 3 years. Vitali is gone in 2012, and Wlad maybe 2013. Helenius would be 29 then and if he is handily whooping the competition, he'd be my pick to be the top guy. Someone to watch. Alls Im saying.
And it's not like in his 12 wins he hasnt fought any decent competition. His opponen s combined records are 172/83. And he has a KO win vs Lamon Brewster already.
David Price?? Price is 2.03 meters, which is about 6'9 1/2. He was an accomplished British amatuer, and seems to posses punching power with 7 wins and 5 Ko's.
Good take. We all, well most of us, thought Povetkin was it. Some think Fury or Del boy. Del boy is getting fed to the wolves and his career is likely going to be derailed, while Fury hasnt fought ANYBODY. Povetkin ducks every opportunity and fights cans after ducking the champ. Yes, Solis is a lard, but MAYBE, just MAYBE he will take this sport seriously and find himself at 240/250 and make a run. Thats IF he can get past Austin, who beleive it or not is a slick fighter against fatasses. Boystov doesnt impress me at all and hasnt stepped up. With this fight with Levin, Helenius will have fought better fighters that Povetkin, Boystov, and Solis, and until this article about him was written, I hadnt even see a thread on him on ESB. Except of course this particular one which I posted like 4 months or so ago.
Think Vitali will retire by the end of next year, then Wladimir is very likely to dominate the division for many years. The next great is likely to emerge during the 2012 olympic games, the one to take over after Wladimir. If not him, then someone young who is gaining experience in the pro game, with serious power.. someone like Denis Boytsov.
He participated at the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_World_Amateur_Boxing_Championships"]2005 World Amateur Boxing Championships‎[/ame] but lost on points to [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Helenius"]Robert Helenius[/ame] 25-22. Price is still undefeated though his 8 wins are against a combined record of 48-97. Helenius with this win over Levin? would be 206- 86. Not bad for a guy with 14 wins.
