Is what we need in the sport, not in a fighting sense.....but with regards to how he was such a widely disliked figure in the sport. There's a niche there for a boxer to fill and earn an extra 10/20% per fight from guys tuning into their fights in the hope of watching them lose. At the minute all of the top dogs portray a 'nice guy' persona about them.... E.g. Joshua, Spence, Loma, Crawford etc etc I could see someone like BJS doing it if he somehow managed to beat GGG for instance..... But who else have we got?
Broner did a great job but unfortunately for him he didn't have the boxing talent to back up his trash talk
That's the problem lol. You will have to be able to back it up all the time. Hamed was doing it, but he lost and that took away his soul. Currently Wilder has the potential. He's black, American, brash, undefeated, media savvy, but unfortunately I'm afraid he will get find out soon.
I agree with the OP. It is good for boxing, or any sport really, to have characters, but especially for professional boxers where their fights are at irregular intervals unlike most other sports. The bad guy sells, it draws people in, but you need to be authentic as well, or at least be able to fake being authentic. When you are training every day, trying to reach your goals, for most people it is gonna feel like a chore putting on a persona on top of all that work you have to put in to reach the top, and most people aren't comfortable being hated, at least not in real life, on the internet where you can be anonymous it is a different story, you can walk away from it any time you like, but the majority of people in the public eye wouldn't want to set out to be hated, you'd normally be on your best behaviour. Guys like Ali, Tyson, Eubank Sr, Fury, BJS are fascinating characters, although I don't think any of them are 100% authentic, in that they are obviously acting at least some of the time, they don't seem to care all that much if they are hated, which is a rarity really. But good for the sport.
For them to be the next mayweather they cant just have a "love to hate me" attitude. They need to also dangle the carrot infront of those haters eyes (seeing said fighter be defeated). It puts asses in seats but on the other hand i dont think il ever tire of seeing broner get his head kicked in
For the first time, I actually agree with the OP. Ali modeled his outrageous persona on "Gorgeous George" It brings the eyes of the masses to the sport.
They need good fights to be made, fights for the fans, not fights to be “marinated” or play the he said she said game for years and have been be a stinker... That’s what boxing needs...
The top fighter at any given time always has a large percentage of folks who hate them. For obvious reasons. Some more than others. Many of the ATG's from decades long gone were hated by the masses during their fighting days. Those feelings usually quickly change, however, once they are no longer competing or at the top of the rankings.
Thanks to hi, & other like him boxing is rated on a parr with the WWE today by the fringe sports fans
Who would want to be Mayweather? Think about him as a person, tragic figure and it will all end in tears.
Deontay Wilder is a good option. He already has a domestic abuse charge and talks big whilst ducking all comers. He's a perfect villain
