People have said this forever and yet all these former USSR standout amateurs aren't really having big pro careers with the exception of the ones who moved west (Loma, Usyk, Bivol, Beterbiev, GGG, etc). If anything, there seem to be fewer of them breaking through than there were 15 years ago, where you'd even see more American fighters traveling to Central Europe or even Russia itself to fight.
Nationalism is big in boxing, of course and even to the extent where we have seen promoters sign these guys and shelve them intentionally because they know they are threats to their local cash cows.
Someone needs to create a promotional pipeline for these guys. Have them do small shows in the UK or Vegas or something. It can't be that hard, they're fighting for scrap money anywhere else anyway.
That seems to be what Makhmudov is doing up in Montreal, following in the steps of Beterbiev I guess? I'm not sure how many amateurs talented enough to make one of the national teams is going to be lured by their success. It seems like pro boxing will continue to be a part time retirement job for them as long as international athletic competition medals continue to be valued highly over there.
The best talent will get good for contacts but you are right, being British or American certainly helps. It not that the best pro prospects are locked out. In certain cases they will have to fight each other, but brining up Dychko is a special case as he doesn't fight anyone.
I have a felling Jakhongir Zokirov will be something, The 19 year old man child is very big and good. According to Box rec he only lost to the same guy three times! Here he is vs the #1 super heavy weight at box rec who enjoys a 4 year age advantage. A 19 year old has the deck stack against him and needs to mature a bit at super heavy. This content is protected
Same with Brit fighters. What has Dubois done to merit cracking the top ten? Let alone being a mandatory.
Still a baby for a heavyweight. He's seems to be slowly nicely adapting to the seniors, He's improved every time I've seen him. in 3-5 years he's probably gonna be a beast.
What type of pro will the 6'4" 1/2 21 year old skiiied southpaw in Donrov make? How about the 23 year old Mullojonov, who is also a southpaw? These men are #1 and #2 at box rec amateur super heavyweight ratings! And the #3 ranked 25 year old Svetoslav Teterin who lost to Dornov, two has two MD losses to Mullojonov and a win over recently turned pro Mark Petovsky ( would amateur champion at super heavy ) who is a big puncher do as pro's? Stay tuned. I have a feeling all with will players if/when the turn pro.
