I stayed up late and watched Leonard Hearns 1 last night, first time in several years...
It was obvious from the get go the anti Leonard bias from the commentators , and while I've always liked Hearns, he had this smug, smarmy look on his face throughout the first half of the fight, eyeballing and grinning at Leonard anytime he landed a punch.

It was obvious he was there embarrass to Leonard and it was obvious that's what the broadcast team was hoping for as well..
But it all ended up backfiring on them, and to see Leonard walk through fire only to comeback and manhandle poor Tommy like a rag doll Muppet was truly inspiring. I didn't score the fight but I will rewatch again this weekend and score it.

I was only 1 year old when that fight happened, so I don't remember any context about it, but that's the beauty of film, is you don't have to take someone else's version of events, you can see it for yourself....

But I don't know where this notion comes from that SRL took some easy, yellow brick road path to stardom. That boy was in hard fights against hard fighters, and he was facing up the media agenda even back then.

Anyways, for anyone who enjoys seeing a c0cky fighter getting what's coming to them, I highly recommend this classic if you haven't seen in a while....it does run a bit long so be sure you have plenty to drink

It was a great victory for Ray, especially coming from behind. I remember at one point wondering if Hearns might even score a TKO on the earlier rounds, as Ray kind of looked bewildered. But his comeback at the end had me cheering. Fight wasn't too long imo...there's a reason those were known as championship rounds.

Hearns weighed 145 with a same day weigh-in. Leonard said Hearns looked like one of those hungry kids from Africa at the weigh-in. There were rumors in Detroit that Hearns was over trained before the fight. Credit to Leonard for winning that fight. Too bad he wasn’t that eager to have an immediate rematch like he did with Duran.

What’s crazy is that Leonard said he was waiting all night for an opening, if it was a 12 round fight, Hearn’s might’ve won.

Hearns was ahead on the cards after twelve rounds. Leonard had to stop Hearns to win.

My grampa used ta say Leonard the best lightweight ever and that he never let a hair get outta place on his head. I wish I'd been around when he was sometimes.

Hearns came in a full 2 pounds under the limit. A surprising and amateurish mistake.
No doubt it contributed to his defeat.

Well to be fair I don’t think many people were expressing shortcomings about Tommy going into the fight, let’s face it he was a monster at welterweight.
All things considered plus the way he won it, walking down the puncher when behind, this is undoubtedly Leonard’s greatest win.

Leonard said when they were on the press tour Tommy dressed in kind of baggy clothes and slumped his shoulders and didn’t stand up straight.

When they got in the ring and Tommy took his robe off he kind of unfurled his whole body and stood up straight and broadened his shoulders with that cobra V down to his waist and Ray realized just how big he was.

Tommy didn’t look frail when he was destroying Pipino Cuevas or a host of other welters on his way up.

Hearns did look frail but what I want to know is
WHAT smug look is he talking about? He says Tommy was carrying a smug look but i noticed nothing out of the ordinary

it was the weight he came in at, 145. His trainers should have beefed him up some. I thought Ray looked very strong especially around the shoulders

He came in the same for Espada and Curry and looked devastating. One pound heavier for Randy Shields.

It’s same-day weigh-in. If he had come in a half-pound or pound over and had to sweat/jump rope/whatever to take it off, we’d be talking to this day about how that cost him the fight and was the reason he faded.

I really don’t think it was a stamina issue so much as Ray being the first to show that Hearns didn’t have a concrete chin. Wobbled him early and didn’t get him out of there ... when he did it late he finished.

I think it’s the best title fight ever contested at 147 by two ATGs at their peak. Somebody had to lose.
