That's how I feel about it, too. To me, this Dawson that he'll beat won't be that different from the one he would have at 175. Ultimately, this fight is a game of chess. Not a war of attrition. So the weight doesn't concern me that much personally. But like you say, others don't feel the same and he's already given them a plausible reason to taint his victory.
Dawson's a champion himself. Ward's belts weren't what made him [Dawson] call him out. It was the name and future star status of Ward that did it. It's his scalp that Dawson wants. Not the belts. Hence why that 170 catchweight that he requested would have been a non-title fight.

I'm a fan of Ward, but I do admit he should of met Dawson halfway not just in weight but also in venue.
I got Ward by horribly boring UD. Gotta see how Chad looks back down at 168 in the fight to determine if Ward gets any props for it tho. I hate Chad, so I'm both pickin and rootin for Ward to whoop him.
