Sorry with the slow update on this major card, I’m sure you all know what happened with Somrak by now. I still can’t find all the fights, none of the usually sources seem to have them all up yet, they keep coming in bit by bit. Still no Sam- A, Penek or Tingtong yet!!!!! I’ll post them all as I find them, this card deserves to be in full, it was a great night of top tier MT with almost every bout qualifying for a main event.

I enjoyed this bout, Superlek had to change game plans a couple of times to take control. It started out as a classic Southy vs Orthodox bout with lots of quality mid level kicking at range, but it was too even with possibly Saengmanee having a tiny edge with is quality teep. In the 3rd Superlek changed all that by turning it into a clinching knee fest, he was too strong for Saengmanee in the clinch and that’s what ultimately won it for him. That meant Superlek could now back off a bit as he knew Saengmanee now had to come forward and take risks in the 5th which made easy pickings for Superlek’s quality right kick to the body which is always very easy to land on a southy’s exposed and “open” left side. Enjoyed it.:good

I really like Nong O, I love his striking at range he puts kicks and punches together nicely, but he suffered physically in this one against the taller but less talented knee specialist. The clip is so short, so it’s hard to get a good gauge on the fight, but I’m guessing Yod started to take over in the 3rd by grinding Nong down by pulling him into the clinch with relentless knees leaving no room for Nong to get his kicks and punches off. Being a shorter man in the clinch against a tough knee specialist is super exhausting and Nong looked ****ed in that last round.

Knee war!!!!! What a good fight, had a lot of venom in it. Petboonchu was just too strong, too big and too relentless , although credit to the quality Diesellek for bring serious fire to make it a good fight.

Now that was a war!!!! A lot of fire in this one, both guys are from the same town. Talk about beauty and the beast, Mongkolchai is a beautiful striker when given space and we all know about Sagetdao’s effective, awkward & ruffhouse but horribly ugly clinching. It’s amazing how everyone on the MT world knows what Sagetdao is gonna do but no matter what it seems impossible to stop him. You can be guaranteed by round 5 of any fight Sagetdao will have you in a clinch and you ribs will be mush! It started out looking like the very strong Mongkolchai may actually get to Sagetdao and do the unthinkable of stopping him but then Sagetdao flipped the switch. Relentless, relentless relentless. It’s a word I use a lot with Thais but I think Sagetdao is near the top of the list for relentless fighters, boy can he take some punishment and just shake it off. A super tough, super conditioned knee specialist has to be any fighter’s darkest nightmare. :scaredas:

So Singdam wins again in the rubber, (I think Wanchalerm won the first?). Good fight, I like both these guys a lot, it’s just a shame the way they edit some of these fights, and it makes it really hard to get the gauge on how much Singdam may or may not have dominated or how close it may have been until the 5th. The other rounds must have been pretty action packed as Wanchalerm looked totally ****ed in the 5th and was trying to catch massively.

Thanks for finding the other two fights Yaca. I’ve really been wanting to see the Penek fight to see how he’s handled his injury and by Thai standards the looooong break. It looks like it’s cost him a little, he looked a bit “heavy” and slow on his feet on the outside in the first three making him easier to tip off balance and counter. Seems there’s some controversy over the decision on the forums, sure it was close but with the current way the Thai scoring system gives a lot precedent to knees and clinch work you can kind a see why it went to Penek by a hair. He won both the 4th (just) and for me he won the 5th with his clinch work. The 3rd was massive for Petpanomrung, who looks quality from range. Anyway, he was unlucky not to get the nod against Sagetdao earlier in the year and he’d had an amazing run so I don’t mind him getting the benefit of the doubt. If he gets active again I still think he’ll get better and better. Thinking about why the Sam-A rematch didn’t happen this time, maybe after his break he felt he needed a few “regular” fights before such a high profile rematch.

Is Sam-A the most elusive fighter in Muay Thai? Is he possible one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time? They should call him the ghost cos he is just impossible to hit, a super skilled elite fighter! It’s very very very hard to fight MT going backwards, it’s a forward thrusting pressure style so to win in such an emphatic manner against top tier fighter on the back foot is pure genius. He has to be one of the greatest of the current crop of top tier guys. :bowdown

I reckon a part of them regrets never really having a proper fight career and going into the movies. On a serious note, I know JCVD has a bit of an amateur FC Karate record but he ain’t never gonna fight Somluck and if he does even though he clearly has the weight advantage he’s only find pain and lots of it, he gets brutally battered by an out of shape Somluck.:deal

To be honest he must've cared abit they both put up 2 million baht each as a side bet for this, winner takes all. :shock:

He looked pretty focused earlier on and I reckon he really thought he had enough natural skill (& ego) to grind out a win even unfit, but in the second he soon realised he'd bitten of more than he could chew the silly bugger!

 

Somluck must have gone though all his dough again! What with his 6 fight deal in Bangkok he's singed another fight deal in the States.

According to the My Muay Thai website he's signed to fight American Chike Lindsay for the main event at Push Kick Promotions “Muay Thai World Stand Off” March 2nd 2013.

That's a lot of prospective fights for a guy who is basically an ancient pensioner in MT years. I hope the Jomhod fight was a bit of a reality check, so it doesn't all turn into an embarrassing RJJ campaign of endless embarrassing paydays......

What an entrance! For those that don’t know Thailand that well that entrance was oozing, infact exploding with Thai national Pride which is basically the point of the Thai fight promotion. You’ve got Thailand’s biggest warrior Muay Thai export ever coming out to the theme from Bang Rajan which is a movie about a famous last stand against the Burmese, sung by Thailand’s No 1 nationalist singer Ad Carabou in an event held in King Rama V square, under a giant banner of the current King Rama 9, both of which are probably Thailand’ most popular recent Kings, all this to basically slaughter a foreigner! You gotta love subtlety!

Anyway, back to the fight….What a crappy final and boy is it all just oh so easy for “the great one” even against an ugly messy spoiling fighter like Hurkou, who was over committed and off balance the whole time lunging in without any real thought…..horrible unattractive MT. Anyway. Buakaw is the 70kg champ…..again. Wonder what’ll happen with Aikpracha & Khem next year? :think

A lot of people are slagging off Thai fight cos the bouts are too easy for the Thais particularly Buakaw, but Thai Fight & Buakaw have achieved something previously quite hard and that’s get the casual Thai from the middle class watching Muay Thai, not an easy thing to do. The Thai fighters are supposed to win for the Thai nationalist audience, but to be fair how many foreigners out there have the skills to beat Singmanee, Sudaksorn, Buakaw etc? not many at all. The promotion is slick, classy and world class it should be a big international hit, but they’ve gotta get the match ups more competitive I admit, but who’s gonna be the star and carry the show when Buakaw calls it a day? No one has his international and domestic profile in the vast ranks of Thai MT fighters.

By the way there was also a 4 man HW tournament on the night, but I didn’t post it cos I think heavyweight MT should be banned, it hurts my eyes………

Don’t take this the wrong way mate, but Muay Thai is a small guy's sport, it just wasn’t designed with the big boyz in mind. HW Muay Thai and say Muay Thai under 70 kilos are just two totally different sports. There are so few big guys that have the athleticism and coordination to master even basic techniques let alone fight in a fluid attractive manner. Because of the rarity of quality big boyz most fights in the division look like novice fights by Thai standards and hence pretty unwatchable, especially if your used to watching Thailand’s finest day in and day out.

To be honest it’s not really their fault, their own bodies and the sports basic fundamentals are all stacked against them: in the clinch balance is key, the ability to take repeated low kicks is a must, the crucial ability to increasing the pace of the fight to its zenith in the 5th are all a few things physically problematic for most big men and that’s before we even start getting into the natural coordination and body mechanics needed for learning correct and fluid technique. Don't get me wrong of course some HWs can cut the mustard, but boy are they rare.

HW MMA I enjoy, HW boxing & HW K-1 styled kickboxing I can just about stomach, but HW MT………. it’s just way toooo painful for me to watch. It’s like when the X factor takes a classic ATG song and then butchers it with some shinyfaced little *****.

No, I've never been drawn to weapons and I value my facial features enough never to wrap on the hemp!

Muay Kaad Chuek is basically just “normal” MT with the long hemp wraps and no gloves and Krabi Krabong is just an extension of ring MT with a Krabi in each fist. I’m old skool Lynchy, I don’t see any difference between Muay Boran, Muay Thai, Muay Kaad Chuek, Krabi Krabong etc etc. to me they are all MT with the same fundamental mechanics and an overwhelming amount of shared techniques. It’s only really over the last 10 years post Jah Pannom’s Ong Bak movie combined with the rise of MMA that these variants have even become marketable. No one used to talk about Muay Boran or any of its current variants; it’s really just a “money thing” in the west pushed by commercial clubs, organisations and magazines to promote something new, authentic and esoteric, to people hungry and willing to pay for something apparently different. It’s not really an issue in Thailand were they are basically all seen as the same thing with possibly Krabi Krabong given a certain cultural elevation over the others. That being said I recently missed a seminar given by Tony Moore in London that would’ve been really interesting, I couldn’t make it, a shame.

Your right about K-1, it is a form of forced KO hunting, but that’s the way Mr Ishsi designed K-1 to be. He wanted to design a super exciting style of striking MMA at the time, which gave no apparent advantage to any of the different striking martial arts that would also be explosive enough to attract more casual fans not clued up on the subtle nuances of each system. Ground breaking stuff at the time, but ultimately insufficient for diehard fans.

Yep, I’d say what people call “Dutch MT” is definitely more suited to the big boyz and even more suited to K1. You have to remember no Thais above 70kgs, hence a lack of depth and serious competition, so more chance of success without the knowledge of how to clinch and knee effectively. That’s why the Dutch boys do so well these days in Glory and K1 but not so well on the actual MT circuit in Thailand. But going back to me being old skool again I can remember how “Dutch MT” came about. In the 80s and 90s when the pioneering Dutch boys were going over to Thailand and taking on the Thais they were doing well but their clinch work was shite as it was for every foreigner at the time, just watch an old Dekkers :bowdown or Ronnie Green :bowdown fight, legends they both were but when it came to the clinch they were lost. In the late 90s many foreigners realised that we could match the Thais with their feet and fists, but to really have a chance of beating them we had to learn how to control and be strong in the clinch to knee effectively and score highly. The French were really the first to adapt and reaped the rewards for a time but then everyone caught up, the Dutch however never really took to clinching and hence the term “Dutch MT” was born. So it was born out of a lack of evolution thanks in part to the huge national icon status given to the mighty Diamond Dekkers.
