This kind of opinion has low relevance.
More generally, if fighter A has boxed with fighter B but not with fighter C, his natural tendency is to overrate fighter B and to have him as a favorite in an eventual match B vs. C. Why?

1.a if A lost against B, were B to lose against C, A would look very bad to have lost against a fighter who would then appear not as the very top. At least if A loses, it would be less bitter for him to think he lost against the best. This is Dirrell's case.
1.b if A won against B, were B to lose against C, A's performance would somehow lose a part of its value: it's less worthy to beat an opponent who accumulates losses than to produce a rather rare upset of an otherwise top fighter. This is Ward's case.

2. by fighting B, A gets a deeper insight on B's skills, while having only second-hand knowledge about what C can do in the ring. Having to compare the known with the uncertain, the natural preference is given to the safe bet of B's known skills. This is both Dirrell's and Ward's case.

So I wouldn't attach too much importance on what Dirrell (or, by the same token, Ward) think about this match's issue. The opinion of a fighter like Magee who met both Froch and Bute (and lost to both, so he has no particular reason to be more biased towards one of them) has more relevance; it is still to be noticed that he met a younger and less experienced version of Froch, so his first-hand knowledge about Froch's skills could be slightly outdated, a fact that alters a bit the value of his statement about Bute being the best opponent he faced, more skilled than Froch.
