I must confess. My expectations were so low for Golota-Mollo, I did not even watch! Visions of the heart breaking Golota-Brewter returned and I bailed. Left to a friends house right when the ring walks began. Later that night I went to fightnews and said "holy **** he actually won!!!"

 

Thanks for the translation. I'm not Polish but Golota's been my favorite fighter since I first saw him fight on Tuesday Night Fights, pre-Bowe. He looked cool and menacing and you could see the world class talent even then.

So I hope Golota does some Polska Sila on Peter's face. :ko

 

I can believe that.

I just can't picture Peter wobbling down the road at 4 00 AM for a few mile run.

 

Maybe we should petition HBO to do a Golota Peter 24/7 series to hype the fight, as they did Oscar and Floyd.

That would be soo cool!

“I’m working my strength”

In the few last days there has been speculation on the topic of a fight between Andrew Golota against Samuel Peter, WBC world champion, which Don King spoke about in my interview with him. Some claim that the fight won’t happen because the Pole doesn’t want it; others claim the 40 year old Andrew Golota remains as a constant dangerous fighter, and that the Nigerian would risk losing his title. Let’s read what Andrew has to say…

Have you started training in preparation for the Peter fight?

: No, because I haven’t had any discussions with King in this matter. I don’t know what’s going on. Does he not like me? Everyone around is writing about this, but I practically haven’t had any contact with King since my last battle with Mollo in Madison Square Garden. Maybe the papers will arrive, something concrete… there isn’t much time, but I was planning some bike riding in Colorado.

Is that a new training method?

: You bet. Before Mollo I was in Colorado for 3 weeks, I trashed two bikes, but as far as my conditioning I was prepared as if I was a 25 year old. Everything was in order – my legs, body. I felt like a young spirit. Now I wanted to do the same thing, but if I’m to fight in July there’s not enough time left.

So you're not training at all?

: I have not been in the ring but I’m working my strength. I weigh about 250 pounds so I’ve gained a little, but the 10-12 pounds could easily be lost. Besides, a good chunk of that weight is new muscle.

What would you tell those who claim that you won’t step in with Peter because you’d be afraid of him?

: I’ve never discussed anything, with those who have a good view of me and those who have a bad view of me – I’m not about to start at age 40. How many times in my career have I gotten scared of someone and not entered the ring? This is boxing – if you’re afraid to fight, you’ve chosen the wrong business.

You’re body is 40 years old. One American reporter who wrote about King’s efforts to organize a Peter-Golota fight wrote “of all the top world contenders that I’d like to see fight Peter, Golota would be the best candidate because he’d be able to win”. He added that the Pole would have lots of heart for his old age and would make for a very uncomfortable opponent for Peter.

: Old age? What old age, gentlemen? Am I coming into the ring in a wheelchair? I don’t have much time left but my memory is still in tact. In fact, many things have come back to me.

Do you believe it will come down to this fight?

: Not too much. From what I’m hearing, Peter’s people don’t necessarily want to see me in the ring with him. King will probably want to shove me in there but the bottom line is the last word belongs to Dino Duva. They want to bring the risk to a minimum because upon winning awaits a serious wage for a battle with the older Klitschko. To me none of it makes sense – I would be fighting for the interim WBC title with Peter, and later for a normal title with someone else, who gets this opportunity because he once fought well? And if I win and Klitschko starts putting off his fights again because politics pop into his mind, so in the end would I have this title or not? It’s all mixed up. It seems Shelly Finkel agreed to this too quickly with Don – it’s something to look into to.

That doesn't sound as definite anymore. I don't like the fact that Andrew doesn't think he would have enough time before July, although Joecool mentioned it would be at the end of July.

He's funny though. I like the comment about the wheelchair. He still seems confident in his ability.

 

Well I guess mid-May is rolling up fast. A fight with Peter would be a huge fight for Golota. There would be quite some work to do in the gym and on his conditioning, which I am sure would be a main weapon against Peter. And given that its almost already mid-May he would have probably only 2.5 months to do the training he needs. Which I guess isnt too much, considering his age, and that he has not fought in a while.

 

If that interview is accurate I'm scared for Andrew if the fight does happen now. He needs to be training his ass off for this guy.

Andrew needs a fight by July weather he is fighting Peter or some bum in a tune up. Inactivity can kill a fighter.

Golota Peter won't bring in enough money to pay Oscar's laundry bill.

 

He certianly does. Packing on more muscle to increase his KO power, as well as saying he feels like he did when he was 25, and that some things have come back to him.

He seems fully confident that he's not hindered from being 40, and seems to think he's ready for anyone.


But the Peter fight does seem unlikely, given that Golota has not heard anything yet. But if they did notify Golota shortly, he'd have 2.5 months, which I would think would be plenty of time, seeing as how he's already doing strength work and never gets too over his fighting weight.

I always suspected that the Golota risk was too big for Peter to take, given that it may knock Peter out of his big Vitali payday.

But, we shall see. I'd hate to see Golota not get the fight, but I bet Peter will fight someone out of those three other unknowns, like JD Chapman.

I will be delighted to do a Fantasy Warfare match pitting Golota against Ali.
However, I hold the opinion that Golota would never beat Ali in a prime for prime clash.
Frazier was a different fighter than Golota, he knew how to get under Ali's guard and hence that is why he won the first match in 1971.
Golota would use his usual jabs and combinations, but Ali was a better jabber and combination puncher than Golota.
Ali would use no end of tactics and tricks against Golota, there is no comparison.
I like Golota, but he is not Muhammad Ali's league.

I disagree somewhat. Golota has that George Foreman power and is similar to his style in some ways. Ali had his hands more than full against Foreman, and I think Ali would have had his hands more than full against a 100% Golota.
