The posts in this thread have largely been great to read. Props to all of you guys for your insightful input.

Yes, fights are scored in real-time.

I don't think you can blame people for thinking the fight was closer, nor can you blame them for thinking Manny won because they were probably able to pick up on certain shots landing/missing that the next person didn't notice properly - real-time scoring of this glorified sparring session is a true eye-test.

What if you saw upon closer observation that Mayweather scored a number of punches that you didn't otherwise think he did in any given round? Maybe that might change the dynamic of the round for you. Because other than the punches landed, there was nothing else really to separate the two because there was very little action.

A decent poster Drew101 outlines his summary on the scoring criteria in the particular match which I don't agree with:
'Four criteria for scoring the fight:

    * Clean, effective punching (and any "tap" that forces a reset would be considered effective).
    * Ring generalship (Mayweather dictated the tempo of the round throughout the first two minutes)
    * Defence (Both guys defended well at points, but Mayweather did a better job of defending throughout the round)
    * Effective aggression (Push. Mayweather went forward early, and Pac went forward late. )'

No taps had forced a reset in this fight.
Ring generalship cannot be measured by the number of minutes.
I do think people forget that effective aggression is multifaceted in practice. You don't win points on defense if you literally run in order to reset. This if anything will mean you have been overreactive to aggression (you make it 'effective'). There's a definite ying and yang effect here that cannot be overlooked.

In a match like this perculiar one with all other scoring factors turning out to have only a small influence, landed punches makes all of the difference. That is why there has been a media backlash to the bias commentary, the compubox statistics, the bias Floyd fans that claim it was a 'schooling'.

Shane Mosley has said continuously that this fight could have been scored a draw. I think he's seen nuances that we're only just starting to catch onto.

Say what you will but this fight has confirmed for me that Pacquiao is well into the Top 20 of all time in terms of overall greatness (despite not being in my Top 20 for the 'best' fighters based on ability - Mayweather is in my Top 20 for ability).

P.S I didn't know you were a massive Floyd lover, IB.

    1. Actually a fight with 230 landed punches would seem to emphasize "all other scoring factors," if anything. But OK. 148 >>>> 81.

    2. "Media backlash?" The only backlash was from the bad guy winning and the good guy almost getting doubled up in punch count.

    3. Only bias commentary and scoring were the pro-HBO HBO-employees backing their network.

    4. You think Mosley has "seen nuances that we're only just starting to catch onto."

OHMAGAWD YES! The mighty Shane Mosley has set us all straight. Millions and millions of people will see a completely different fight when they watch this again! No, dude. Many of us know boxing. We all saw a decisive victory.

    5. Losing 9 rounds to Mayweather finally made you confirm your thoughts of Pacquiao's greatness? You're a little late to the party.

    6. P.S. Dedicated and crazed fanboys like you can turn any man off of anything.

I'm not. You've proven yourself pretty conclusively to be a massive Pac lover or Floyd hater, though.

Your post was just a completely moronic moan. I already said that the two times I watched it real-time before slow motion and further ****ysis, I had scored it 8-4/9-3 (Mayweather).

I've never been known to be a huge Pacquiao fan. I just thought that this fight between two Top 50 ATG's left a lot grey areas which needed to be uncovered to be able to put it to rest.

It's funny you talk about 'turning off' as the world has been turned off boxing somewhat after that horrendous showing by both fighters (more so by Mayweather).

More so by the guy who landed 148 punches as opposed to the guy who landed 81 punches??? More so by the guy who threw more punches???

Cool story you've made up there.

Just went through your post history, Gannicus, and you've spent 2 years erecting a built-in excuse by claiming Pacquiao has been "shot to bits" for years while Mayweather is, as recently as last year, "in his prime". :rofl

    :patsch

No offense, but on this subject, or any to do with either fighter, your opinion has to be viewed as very suspect in terms of impartiality.

118-112? Where did you get the extra 2 points in your score? Were you giving Manny 11 point rounds? It's bad enough to be a terrible enough scorer to give this fight to Manny. But at least learn how many points you get for winning a round. :patsch

    Wow.

Most of them just started preemptive damage control the day the fight was signed but this guy has been ahead of the pack!

Looking forward to complete-prime-Mike Perez to do battle with utterly-beyond-wasted-shot-why-doesn't-he-just-retire-Alexander Povetkin.
