There are a half dozen solid fringe contenders/veterans ranked in the top 30, who would fare well in progressing towards a Chagaev fight by using Briggs as a stepping stone.

Why are these guys not calling him out. His name value is as good as any's from the past era, and his ranking artificial or not, still leapfrogs them right into the top 5.

Kauffman, Price, Tony Thompson, Eddie Chambers, heck, even Lateef Koyode could probably beat Briggs and reassert himself as a top 5 WBA contender.

Chagaev has yet to announce a fight to defend his "notsonewly" won title, but the WBA seems set in Ortiz being his first and last defense, but if I were Ruslan, I'd be negotiating with Briggs myself. Better name opponent means more gate, and more gate means more $$$$$.

As for the others.....they're not in line for a title fight. But takign a scalp such as Briggs would almost guarantee them a shot at the WBA titlist, especially considering 3 of the top 5 are vying for position in the WBC title race. :think

 

Hell, even Alexander Petkovic would benefit from a Briggs fight, and the appeal of winning a MINOR world title, the GBU, might make it financially beneficial for both parties in what would be a 60/40 type fight with Briggs being the SLIGHT favorite, but the winner would have that solid victory, legitimizing their claim as contenders.:think

 

Heck, I'd say a solid vet like Oquendo would boster his chances at another title shot, 10fold by earning a workman-like decision over Briggs.

Im not saying all these guys would beat Briggs, but the only top 100 that Briggs has beaten since his comeback was a Zumbano-Love, and 9-6 Fabrice Aurieng beat Love just a decisively as did Briggs, aside from scoring a few KDs from sheer brute force.

Just saying......Briggs is a fairly easy win for many "not taken serious" WBA contenders. And his name value get them taken MUCH MORE SERIOUSLY.:thumbsup

 

He won't fight any of those guys unless it's Chagaev in Grozny, Povetkin in Moscow or Klitschko for much $$$$$$$$

He knows he aint getting a shot by beating the Carmacks, but if he beats a Petkovic, he could get the Ortiz/Chaggy winner, and that would give him leverage towards a 100K payday vs the WBA titlist. :think

To be honest, with the choice of opponents for Briggs, he should go down the rankings, not up in the rankings with every fight he wins.
