true, but as he went up and fought bigger guys, he had to use his reflexes, footwork, timing to neglect his opponents advantages

Power is the lynchpin. Having it or not dictates the style by which you fight.

Problem is that guys who have it often rely on it too much. It's the rare bird that is able to combine power with other attributes to make them a more complete fighter. That's why the RJJs, the Pacquiao's are such rarities.

He had average power. Not very poor power.

That was enough to get the job done given his other skills.

Why was he so bold at 130 and 135 fighting Castillo and Corrales and not ducking them? Because he knew he had enough power that they would respect him and not try and run right over him.

You're honestly comparing provodnikov to Matthysse? And then comparing them two to kovalev?!

Matthysse is on another level to provodnikov in terms of skill, and kovalev is in another dimension than both of them put together.

Speed and skill maybe better but power is most exciting. Cos you know a KO could happen any time.

ok then tell rigo to fight ruslan
when you have so much power advantage it means nothing you can be the most skilful fighter

    This.

Look no further than the majority of "hypejobs." What aspect of their game is usually most pushed down our throats and praised? Punching power. What aspect of the game is best used to look impressive against poor or over matched opposition? Punching power.

Even among proven world level fighters those with great punching power are usually the ones that gain the most fans and support. And people will justify what becomes false predictions involving class fighters most frequently with "power" as their reasoning.

  11. Obviously, but what are all three known for? Even tho Kova is highly skilled and his skill is often overlooked because of his punching power.

I'm not saying they fight the same exact fight or have the same skill level, but all three were made popular by their power.

Ehh, as I look through history at the past greats. Most of them have at least above average power even compared to the top contenders.

Whitaker, Mayweather, Pep, Toney, etc. that seems to be the minority.

Even greats can look overmatched by great punching power. Duran and Frazier were ATG fighters who were overwhelmed through sheer power.

    So power has its utility.

Toney shouldn't be in that category. Toney always went in for the kill. Toney is honestly one of the toughest guys in the history of the sport. Remember, he was called "Lights Out" for a reason. He used to KO everyone.

Give me IQ and timing over power; however, if you have all three... man, you'll be hard to beat. That's a triple threat. If you have more of those special skills besides those three than you have greatness inside you!

Sometimes fighters with power get lazy stop using speed and or skill and just go for glory naz and LLOYD H were two that went that way .Tyson in his latter years did similar but that may have just been as he slowed down .works OK until the other guy takes your best and hits back.no plan B.
