Yeah and the point is that usually 90% of the body punches don't meet those strict criteria. You don't actually believe that, do you? There is no record keeping in amateur boxing especially in obscure regions like Africa. Peter had a shitload more fights than those few in official AIBA tournaments you are referring to. In facts it's pretty sure that he is significantly older than he claims. I may have been exaggerating a little bit but the point still stands
and even for the 10% that do meet that criteria less than 1%(of that 10%) are scored. I've seen guys dropped from body shots that weren't scored. Fine, that's only the second loss of Peter's career that we know about. That doesn't mean he has other losses, although he may. Considering the poor opposition that you pointed to in Africa it's doubtful that Peters picked up many other losses as a senior anyway(if any). I'm one of the people that belives he's the age he claims he is, he doesn't seem that old to me at all and I don't think it's too crazy to assume the guy turns 28 next month.
Most people here aren't true boxing fans, they're fight fans. Amateur boxing is the sport at its purest, where guys train hard for the love of the sport, it's when these guys are at their physical primes, it's faster paced and much tougher to win a world title. The point scoring system works most of the time, it's not like scoring in the pro game is ever messed up is it? atsch
That's one thing I like about amateur boxing. It's nothing but pure boxing. I really enjoyed the matches I saw this morning.
stop moaning, i'd rather watch the boxing on the olympics coverage than fooking dressage which has been on loads today. and swimming drags a bit. only seen the irish light heavyweight so far, he was good against the virgin islander guy. dont see the problem in the scoring except for seemingly perfect punches sometimes go missed. but there's no bias, so it's all good. UK vs USA match coming up soon. unfortunately didnt catch the weight/fighters.
I enjoy high-level amateur boxing, but the scoring system is antiquated and needs to be addressed. Major issues include: 1) Punches that travel a long distance get scored at a disproportionate rate compared to other punches. For all the talk about straight punches, plenty of "wingers" were scoring last night. 2) Body punches, even those that are clearly scoring blows, rarely get counted. 3) Inside fighting in general is overlooked. 4) Scoring does not account for power or the impact on the opponent 5) Aggression does not count for anything 6) Defense does not count for anything, at least directly 7) Knockdowns are scored the same as the weakest of connects Bottom line, the computerized system was an attempt to factor our human error, but unfortunately it has increased human error because of the simultaneous button punch approach. You're asking judges to gauge not only what punches landed, but also on which part of the glove. Typically, it's difficult to see to action on the inside to that precise extent. Judges do not have the discretion to assess the general sense of the fight, scoring rounds for the dominant fighter. Instead, they are forced to guess what lands and on what part of the glove, enabling fighters to manipulate the scoring and giving a hefty advantage to guys with a certain style. Styles makes fights, but in the amateurs that axiom doesn't hold. I'm still happy to watch, though, given the alternatives. It's also fun to evaluate future prospects. I just wish the scoring made more sense.
I think what really pisses people off is the fact that a guy could be hit with ten girly slaps before producing a Julian Jackson right hook and still be miles behind! Another wrong is the fact that a fight gets stopped when a guy goes 20pts behind - many a pro fight has been won whilst way behind on cards. Off topic, I have just seen RJJ's olympic final for the first time. Other than a schooling I have no idea what to say.
Even under their own system the scoring is ridiculous because I've seen a lot of clean hard shots land and not get counted. My only conclusion is a lot of the judges are focusing on one guy to the exculsion of the other. I thought that Azea Augustama (Haiti?) landed WAY more than they credited him. Also, that Ghanian was landing a crapload of hard punches but they weren't hitting the button for him hardly at all. Lucky for him, he took it out of the judges hands by scoring the RSC (or KO if you like).
I'm watching right now as well.. the Iranian guy vs the Puerto Rican... Atleast 2/3rds of the clean punches I counted landed were NOT scored.
