I’ve mentioned this before but Seriously the Larry Holmes fan base is getting out of hand. People who say Fury hasn’t beaten anyone are the same people who say Holmes is top 3 greatest Heavyweights of all time. Holmes’s best win was against a Ken Norton who was well past his best. Yes he got a lot of title defences but so did Wilder and no one is saying he’s in the top 3. Yes Holmes was a very skilled fighter and for me he’s a top 15 all time Heavyweight but my goodness he’s not that good.

I sort of agree with you except I can’t take it seriously after saying Charles is overrated.
Charles is top five all time. Possibly the greatest scalps all time

Holmes went 13-2 in lineal world title fights. Wilder 0-2-1. Or 0-3 on fair scorecards. Holmes is my 3# at Heavyweight, with the 2nd longest reign and number of lineal title defenses I think that's a credible ranking, though credible cases can be made for half a dozen other heavyweights being ahead of him, depending on your criteria

There are a few who consider Ezzard Charles achievements as a contender for the pound for pound best ever!

I’m not getting into my reasoning for calling him overrated again . But people keep misinterpreting what I’m saying about these guys. I agree both Holmes and Charles are great but I personally feel people act like they are unbeatable and no one else can compare to them when in reality they have many flaws which their fans persistently overlook.

Why is the lineal title more important than the alphabet belts? What’s the difference really? Fury is currently the lineal champ so does that mean he’s better than Usyk?

Because there is 1 lineal champion, who is supposed to be best in the world at that weight*, and multiple alphabet titleists, who by definition cant all be the best in the world.

*I appreciate the lineal champion isnt always the best in the world. Liston was better than Patterson for the whole of the latters reign, as an obvious example. But Holmes was likely the best Heavyweight in the world for the majority of his 7 year reign and perhaps a short while before it.

I'd make Fury favourite to beat Usyk or anyone else, not because hes the lineal champion, but because I think hes the best heavyweight in the world. Hes the lineal champion because he was the best Heavyweight in the world when he fought Wlad and still is.

Who acts like Holmes is unbeatable ? what your saying in this thread is a fantasy.

Where are the Holmes fans "getting out of hand" ranting and raving about how great Holmes is ?

Where are the Holmes fans "making out he's unbeatable" ?

As for Charles you already made a thread about "Ezzard Charles being overrated". And never actually went into any detail why you made such a claim. All you did is make a baseless opinion without any statistics or facts to back up your point.

    Louis
    Walcott x2
    Moore x3
    Bivins x3
    Maxim x3
    Burley x2
    Marshall x2

If beating those fighters make you "overrated" then i'm flabbergasted in all honesty.

My question to you is how many other Light Heavyweights have a better resume than Charles ? and name 10 Light Heavyweights in the past 100 years who you'd favour over Charles ? if he's so "overrated"

I don't see Holmes as unbeatable, but I don't see many beating him at his best.
    He proved himself really.
No one stays at the top that long unless their bloody good.

How on earth did Holmes go 21-2 in lineal title fights?

How was Ken Norton the LINEAL champ? Who did Norton win the LINEAL title from?

I just did a bit of research and apparently he won it after the Muhammad Ali fight, so i believe Holmes went 12-2 in lineal title fights.

Fair point. I confused Ali being stripped of a title for fighting a 7-0-1 Leon Spinks, instead of a clearly more deserving challenger in Norton, with the lineal title changing hands. You're right, it didn't until Holmes beat Ali, which makes him 13-2 in lineal title fights.
I still think its reasonable to postulate he was the best heavyweight in the world from the Norton fight onwards, whereas I dont think Wilder, Holmes comparison to whom triggered my initial response, ever clearly demonstrated that
