http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6983512/hagler-vs-leonard Bernard Hopkins (middleweight champion, 1995-2005; current WBC and The Ring magazine light heavyweight champion): I always was a Hagler fan. I identified with him. Bald head, black guy, never really smiled. I don't want to compare color obviously, Leonard was black, too. But Leonard had an Oscar De La Hoya type of presence when it comes to marketing. Leonard had the smile; he had the charisma. Hagler, no disrespect to anyone, but he had the D-block look, like he was out of Rahway State prison. It was a hard look. It was his look. That drew me to him, and later I identified with the hard way he came up through boxing. Tompkins: It was a white-collar guy and a blue-collar guy. Ray was the white-collar guy; he just knew how to work a room. He was always that way. He had a demeanor that just said, "I'm somebody important." Marvin was an everyman no pretention at all. I remember when he was champion, one year he and his wife took a Winnebago and went to campgrounds all over the country. I think they took a month, driving around from campground to campground, pressing the flesh with people, barbecuing hamburgers. I really wish more people would have seen that side of him.
Surprising to read Hopkins bring up skin colour almost immediately when talking about Hagler. Not what you'd expect from the same lowlife dirt bag who proclaimed he would "Never lose to a white boy!" (Shortly before crawling around the ring like a wounded seal yelping for mercy en route to losing to said white boy in his own back garden) This racist gutter bug should be legally euthanised.
. Marvin conceded all that in exchange for the pay-per-view revenue from the whole country. The only two states Leonard had were Maryland, where he lived, and Washington, D.C. And that's why Marvin made $21 million and Leonard made $13 million. The base pay was like $12 million for Marvin and $11 million for Leonard. Leonard didn't care about the money he already made his millions. :hat didn't know that
Leonard > Hagler Hagler did a Calzaghe and ran off to Italy to make bad porn to avoid rematching with Leonard. Leonard's boxing skills were always superior to Hagler.
No Calzaghe did a Leonard, throwing ineffective pitty-pat punches that are blocked or do no damage. If you were around then, you would know that SRL did so much commentating because he was in "retirement" or waiting for Hagler to slow down. SRL is so overrated on here.
