After the sad sight of a once great champion having his career and body catch up with him I think the times fitting for a tribute thread.

    Fave Oscar moments-

-The end of the Quartey fight
-The fact he went in with Hopkins and was competive
-Pushing Mayweather the closest since Castillo right towards the backend of career
-The first Mosely fight. Just a beautiful boxing match

He is one of my favorites, the Vargas and Mayorga fights were more recent big moments for me.

De la Hoya was an outstanding young fighter, and a very good one as a veteran. I hope he retires immediately and enjoys his life away from the ring.

The Vargas fight was definetely my favorite moment.

You just knew these 2 guys hated each other with a deep passion and would do anything to get the win, Vargas proved that by taking roids. He knew he was going to get caught he just didnt want lose to Oscar. After the 1st round it looked scary that DLH may lose early but he kept his composure and got the KO.

This reminds me of a scene in one of my favorite All Time Flicks, the 1976 Remake of "King Kong"....on the Petrox Explorer, Jack and Fred are arguing about taking Kong off the Island. Fred tries to tell Jack that the Natives would be thankful for being rid of Kong, but Jack tells him he's dead wrong. Kong was the mystery, the terror of the Island/their lives, in a year, that will be an island of Burned out Drunks.

Same thing with Batman. Batman, on his own is a boring Muther****er. He is a Billionaire, gets some hot ass, collects antiques, and makes billions on the Stockmarket. ZZZZZZ. But once the Joker is in town, and starts ****, trying to take over Gotham, he gets to put on the Batsuit, fire up the Batmobile, and cruise the streets of Gotham, ****ing up the Joker's henchmen, and fending off (though not real hard) the sexual advances of the Evil Catwoman, until he meets Joker, who has a naked Vikki Vale his prisoner, in an Underground Lair, and fights the Joker. hand to hand in an all out Battle that lands up at the roof of the Gotham Tower, a Fight to the Death. But then what?? With the Joker dead, it's back to work as a CEO.

Ali against Henry Cooper? ZZZZ. He needed a Foreman or a Frazier to make life and the Boxing world Interesting.

The Sport of Boxing needs an Oscar de la Hoya. Without him, we have no one to root against.

I was an Oscare hater for a long time til he fought Vargas and it shut me the hell up and I've had a much softer attitude toward him since.

That left hook was a thing of beauty when it sent Vargas down, nearly decapitated Mayorga. His jab was a laser guided true weapon - I remember him just zinging Miguel Angel Gonazalez with it at his last fight at 140.

I am sad that at least he didn't have a couple of moments in the fight, but I was going for Manny all the way - When I rewatched the replays last night on my PPV I found myself feeling sorry for the guy.

That was a straight up beat down of a bona fide legend in our sport.

I wont start slagging him off now that this has happened. It is time to retire or go back up and build some muscle and get his strength back.

Truth be told, I'm a 22 year old Mexican American male. I grew up watching ODLH fight. I don't think there are really too many real life Mexican American heroes you can look up to other than Oscar. Hell I love Chavez, but he was a little bit before my generation and Oscar was during my time. Tough to see him go out the way he did. Honestly it was a bad choice going down in weight, he looks like a battered scare-crow.

We need a new golden boy! There was Ray Leonard, then Hoya, maybe after the next Olympics...
