Regardless of what Larry Merchant says, Oscar is going to need Tony Russo or Jose Luis Castillo's old doctor to make 147. If he does really get down to 147, it'll compromise his performance.
wasn't there a part of 24/7 that showed his training for cinco de mayo included allowing for a fair bit of his normal (read: piggy) diet? hell if he cuts the **** and lives off wheatgrass, he can challenge Hatton at 140. :good
I don't see DLH coming down to 147. He must be in negotiations to fight Hatton. Still, he will not drop down to 147....maybe a catchweight of 151
I don't see Hatton fighting Oscar. That's probably a way to distract negotiations from Mayweather-Hatton and to try to make Floyd fight Mosley, so Golden Snaggle Tooth still makes money off of Floyd.
With his money, ODLH can probaby make his own weight class and start a whole new sanctioning body. GBBC
With proffesional assistance De La Hoya can make 147 without a problem, Hoya, like Mosely, is not so big that he has to fight at 154, it was just the division that happened to have the fights in it at the time.
De La Hoya will make 147lbs no problem at all. He was ready to make the move back down to 147lbs after he announced he would be returning late 2004. A fight with Mayorga for a title was the only reason he boxed again at 154lbs. Ive had this view De La Hoya is a natural welterweight ever since he left the division. And I can without question, and 100% confidence, he never moved up from 147lbs because he had problems making the weight. Thats a fact. Shane Mosley moved back down from 154lbs recently, and he fought in the division for 3 years. He was also lifting weights at 154lbs.
Oscar had to go completely naked to make 147 for the Trinidad fight. He said he had problems making the weight. He fought there 3 more times, but still...your body is likely to grow from age 27 to 34.
Fighters can miscalculate their weight ever so slightly. De La Hoya would have been ounces over against Trinidad, thus having to strip naked on the scales. During his long middleweight career Hopkins ranged from 156-160lbs, and even managed to weigh-in at 156lbs against De La Hoya. During training camp for his debut bout at 154lbs with Castillejo, he clearly stated he was having to eat and eat to get himself up to 154lbs. I have just looked out one of The Ring magazines after typing the above. "Ever since I left welterweight, I've given up the advantage I had in that weight class" De La Hoya told the Ring early Janurary 2005. "I lost that little advanatge that makes everything work in boxing, and that's speed. Also at middleweight these guys hit harder. They are walking around at 165, 170 pounds. I have to eat to make 155lbs, so I decided to go back down to welterweight. I can make the weight easy, no problem, and I don't have to starve myself. When I was working out for the Bernard Hopkins fight, I was walking around at 151, 152 pounds without even drying out. I'll still be very strong at 147lbs". De La Hoya's bout prior to making the above statement was his fight with Hopkins, September 2004. Thats why he said "I have to eat to make 155lbs" which was what he weighed-in for Hopkins the fight. De La Hoya is not a natural light-middleweight, trust me. Ive known this for a long time. No doubt people will still disagree.
