Overrated: The level of accomplishment and attention given Tyson's KO of Spinks. Spinks was a LHW, nothing more. Any decent heavyweight who didn't have lead weights strapped to his arms and legs would have stopped Spinks.

Underrated: Joey Giardello. People might acquiesce that he was very good if posed the question, but few think to ask. Insanely tough, and one of the best pure boxers out there.

    - It was your opinion. But the fact only Tyson could beat Spinks.
And only Tyson could him knock down and out.

    - Otherwise Tyson's Spinks win isn't overrated because i think about
99% of the boxing fans/journalists say this win was a big nothing.
The average Joe doesn't know Spinks at all obviously he can't
    overrate this Tyson win.

I'm going to start with the assumption that you actually watched this fight, if you did, you'd know what the OP knows, which was that Spinks was scared ****less of Tyson before the fight even started. Hell if it were up to him, he would have fell down before the fight even started. That's why this win is over rated.

Look, anything anybody writes here is an opinion. That goes without saying. You seriously believe that ONLY Mike Tyson was capable of knocking out the Michael Spinks of 1988? Really?

    I've always rated Giardello. :good
Looks very good on film, especially in the earlier fights. He was already past his best when he became champion, I believe, but had a lot of smarts too.

I believe nothing. Only Tyson beat M. Spinks and this is a fact.

hey lets give credit where due, Tyson came after Spinks with no regard and came after him with speed and power at the same time, easy for us to say Spinks was scared, lol, maybe being so scared kept Spinks on his feet for longer for all we know,, impossible to say,

what is clear was Tyson was on Spinks like a pit bull on steroids, Spinks was a fast guy, really fast, problem was so was Tyson.

Now I don't know if this is win is under rated or over rated as I never thought about it and don't keep track of things like that much, regardless, just because Spinks was scared to death prior and during this fight doesn't mean that Tyson didn't use some incredible hand speed and power to smash his fists into Spinks face and body during those 90 some odd seconds.

Not to belabor this particular fight, but Spinks wasn't fast even as a light heavy, let alone heavy.

Spinks had twice spanked Larry Holmes.. He had destroyed 6ft 7ins Gerry ****ey and was thought of as the man who beat the man.

Spinks was never fast and he did nothing but beat relics and I couldve sworn ****ey threw that fight. The ****ey of superfight 81 would KO that hoe

I don't think it's overrated. Yes, Spinks was scared. But he was scared BECAUSE HE WAS FACING TYSON. Tyson put that fear in him by putting in a series of impressive performances. I don't think Spinks would have had that fear against anyone else at that time. He certainly hadn't shown that type of fear against Holmes, ****ey and of course Tagstedt.

Spinks was doomed in that fight, he had no realistic chance of beating Tyson.
    He knew it

The fight is underrated by many. The fact that Spinks had no chance at all, shows how great Tyson was at his peak.
