Does anyone have any links to a video / written guide on how to do the perfect jab for speed and power? I'd love to read about / watch a description of how to throw the perfect jab.

I think that depends on your style. For me the perfect jab would be something like Salvador Sanchez or Mike McCallum. Both are classic boxers so their jab would fit my style well.

Yes, it depends on style, for me for example the best boxers to watch was Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes. More that type of style suited me best.
    All depends on style.

Do you think jabbing without putting the leg into it is fine? I have seen many boxers just throw an arm jab, with the twist of the shoulders but no emphasis through the legs!

If you can reach your target like that, sure. If that will leave you an inch short stepping in would be a decent plan. Whatever lands, don't limit yourself.

Thanks, my friend keeps shouting at me, "put your leg into it", "you get more power", I would do that but it takes practise to do it right, when I fight I only able to throw the jab with the arm at the moment.

You don't have to pick one. I often step in but landing a less powerful jab is better than landing no jab.

There are so many variables when throwing a jab. You have to asses what you want from your jab. There no point is sayin "step into your jab every time" if you are trying to sucker your opponent in whilst backing up - clearly in this instance, you wouldn't "step into the jab".

No amount of reading or watching videos will show you how to perfect your jab - you need a trainer for this.

If you want to watch two fighters, both with great jabs, yet with differing results take a look at Ike Quartey and Chad Dawson.

Ike could knock people out with his jab.

Chad Dawson - this guys jab is damn near perfect. The strength in Chad's jab is it's versatility. Watch how he manouvers people with his jab, doubles and triples it up to keep his opponents off balance, put's some mustard on it when he wants to get someones's attention etc.

The key to developing a 'good jab' is to develop several different 'good jabs'.

Watch Winky for a southpaw and Quartey for an orthadox fighter. Quartey was entirely mediocre (in ATG world terms) but for his frightening power and simply brilliant jab. Quartey's jab was 90% of his fighting ability.

You don't always want power in a jab...
I know you are reading that and thinking, "say what!?" but, hear me out...

Yes, a powerful jab is a good thing, but sometimes a jab can be too powerful. I was fighting once and I kept hitting my opponent with a hard jab, causing them to stumble back a bit...this caused me to miss what I really wanted to land, the follow up right hand. I kept missing the right hand and I realized, I was putting to much into the jab, so I eased up on the jab, throwing just enough to hide the following right hand which now landed perfectly!

You mean setting up a right hand with a jab?

    It depends on your style.

Big long guys tend to use a 3/4 jab to get guys to come into range of the right.

Southpaws like to use a long what I call "Ass Back" jab to keep that guys ass back as you move.

And guys like Cotto have a devastating, for a jab, jab that they step into.

Yeah watch Foremans gold medal match. Brutal jab but that was all he could land because he was killing that poor Russian with it. By the time he beat Moore he had learned to take a lot off of his jab and throw it 3/4 to lure fighters into range of his right. We all know what happend to Moore.

This is an example of a jab that is simply too powerful
