James Toney is the best at it, he blends his defense with offense perfectly and still; doesnt get hit flush....rarely.

also i just found out about a new talent! Tavoris Cloud. he looks great. he uses the same defense but in the same manner as a prime david tua.

Roy JJ, in his hay day, used positioning, distance, lateral movement and an uncanny ability to slip punches very effectively as part of his exceptionally sound and very unorthodox defense...

I would also like to add that Mike Tyson (the 19 year old version) had an absolutely phenominal defense. His ability to not only slip punches, but to also position himself to counter while slipping in one fluid motion, along with his sensationally speedy head movement (and total upper body movement really), is something of Legend. Mike's defensive/offensive style was even more effective for the short Heavyweight than Joe Frazier's crab style defense which gave so many opponents fits in the ring; and once it was gone, so ended the Legend of Kid Dynamite...

I have to also agree that "Sweet Pea" and "Lights Out" are definitely two of the all time best defensive masters of the sweet science I've ever witnessed in the ring as well, no doubt...

Two of the best in this era. James Toney and Floyd Jr. RARELY get his flush. It was funny watching Oscar throw his flurries last year, and hit nothing but gloves and elbows for 12 rounds.

I did indeed, beating up an old man like that, BUT, if he keeps winning I may be forced to give him credit.

Man, I don't even know if there's a name for the style Nicolino Locche used- but I've never seen anybody defend like that as a base defense. Very high risk, but with those defensive skills, he made it work.

His ability to slip, roll and counter was better than anyone the threadstarter named. His reflexes and overall ring sense were as good as I've ever seen. His entire defense was based on ring savvy and upper body work, as he rarely used lateral movement and his footwork was used primarily for balance(and he had top notch balance BTW). Amazing fighter to watch, wish there was more footage.

I agree wholeheartedly, especially with that last part. I'm still trying to track down his first fight with Cervantes where, by all reports, Locche shut him out...but I'm not having too much luck with it so far.

I agree, his defense at HW was very good despite his age fatness due to the relative slowness of the division, but at lower weights at wasn't in the same league as the other people mentioned in this thread.

I'll add my 2 cents for Locche and Willie Pep.

I'm actually pretty sure there is no footage of the first fight from what I've heard, and I've spoken with some high level traders. There may be clips of it, but I'm pretty sure the full footage is not out there.

But yes, all 3 judges scored every round for Locche, and he was a bit past his prime by that point as well, though to be fair Cervantes was a bit green as well.

I believe there's footage of his bout with ATG Carlos Ortiz though(as well as limited footage of his fights with more obscure fighters), which he lost by most accounts though it was scored a draw. Apparently if a fight was not decided by something like 4 points or more they'd call it a draw in Argentina, which is why they are so notorious for casting out draws. Also why Monzon has so many early in his career.

Toney's feet are stuck in glue most of the time.

Yeah, it's probably hoping against reality on my part since I've heard the same thing. If I didn't know that the whole fight was televised when it happened, I'd probably have just completely written it off.
