Whatever defense a fighter feels most comfortable with is the best one.

Philly Shell is good but sometimes it can make you a one armed fighter if your opponent knows how to force himself upon you whereas you can't use your jabbing hand.

Forearm High Guard is decent but you have to wait until your opponent is finished punching before you can punch back. People who hit fast and hard enough could also punch thru it too.

Bobbing and Weaving (Tyson) is good but it requires a lot more energy than the others

Theres more than that its just those were the most popular I could think off.

I don't think Toney's defense is necessarily being over rated here, just mentioned quite a bit is all... I mean, when a guy can climb from Middleweight all the way to Heavyweight and competitively fight in a couple of World Title fights nearly 75 lbs heavier than what many consider his prime weight, and still get hit cleanly as little as he does, especially considering Toney hasn't exactly been in great physical condition for years; you gotta give him his due... It's not like Toney is fleet footed or has height advantages at Heavyweight either, nor is he exactly a young man anymore, yet he still manages to roll with the punches and even nearly beat Sam Peter back in '06... Toney has phenominal defense, no doubt; just look at his resume and remember, the man has never, ever, been KO'd...

Another crafty veteran, who's defensive skills have definitely extended his career by quite a few years, and have also allowed him to successfully climb weight classes without ever being KO'd in his entire professional career (NOT EVER), is B-Hop; another man who deserves his due credit...

Defense is probably the most underrated part of the sweet science, and both of these guys are undoubtedly two very solid masters of the art form...

The only thing that keeps poppin' up in my head though; is that at Super Middle, Roy Jones jr. as a betting underdog, dropped Toney in their fight, and after Roy opened up his guard and stuck his chin out making Toney miss, Toney tried the same trick and got slammed in the mouth for his efforts... None the less though, as he matured as a fighter Toney got better and better, and I think the most improved parts of his game were indeed his defense and counter punching, and he has earned the right to be compared to some of the best ever at it in this sport... I just wanted to add that...

Nicolino Locche was awesome. Toney is also very skilled defensively.

    nope not true.

a shoulder roll can be done with or without a shell. it's just the movment works well during it.

Pretty Boy Floyd also deserves his due credit for his defensive mastery...
He obviously uses the Philly Shell/ Detroit Style/ Shoulder Roll (or whatever other names there are for it) style. I think I originally neglected to acknowledge PBF just because he was already mentioned and mainly because Floyd Mayweather is the most obvious modern day candidate for best defensive boxer on the planet...

I had heard that that was actually a myth, but I am pretty sure that I have seen the round in question and if I remember correctly he managed to make is opponent miss and look stupid the entire time. I guess it comes down to the age old question, what do the judges favour? Ring generalship? Effective aggression? I don't know how the round was actually scored though, so maybe that's where the myth falls down.

James Toney has the greatest defence I've ever seen. More or less since 1994, he has not been very mobile around the ring, and yet he still never gets caught flush, or at least he never gets caught and hurt.
