Willard was set to fight Fred Fulton in 1918. The US was joining the war, which negatively impacted the entertainment industry. Then, Influenza spread quickly, and many people were sick. And food supply was running short as it was being sent to soldiers in barracks.

Amongst all this, it was reported that Willard was about to make $100,000 for a boxing match. Public sentamint turned against the fight. This political cartoon was the nail in the coffin. And the fight was called off.

There was another close call with Fulton for Willard a few year prior. He was in plans to fight him, but the boxing writers quipped thst Fulton was not good enough, and that Moran was much more deserving of the fight. Willard dominated Moran.

At any rate it would have been an exciting match up for sure!

Fulton and Moran seem to have been seen as the main two contenders for Willard.

You also hear Jack Dillon named occasionally.

After that, Dempsey and Miske moved into the picture!
