Just saw the news of the death of Jimmy Ellis..and whilst he was not a young man..it occurred to me how many heavyweights from recent eras have either died or fallen on poor times or poor health.
Deceased..Patterson Cooper Ellis Frazier Lyle Quarry Mason
    Page Williams Morrison Norton
Fallen on hard times or having 'issues' financial or health....Bruno Biggs Ali Tyson
    Holyfield Tubbs Tucker Douglas Bowe
The list is endless...very few seem to get out in one piece in every sense...Lennox ? Foreman ? Cant think of too many more...Renaldo Snipes is doing ok...
Is all this purely down to the profession or would these men have come to a short or unhealthy end anyway ??

Certainly some of the health problems come from boxing, this we know, just look at Quarry before his death. As for hard times, I have very little sympathy, at least for those who made millions and millions on huge paydays and were mega stars. Sometimes the lifestyle catches up and or you simply didn't make enough. But, no excuse if you were making tens of millions in fights.

I wonder how Ali is financially?
Did he take care of his money?

It is a sport for men of desperate fortunes.

It is not what I want for myself, or anybody in my family!

Yeah..its astonishing the paydays some of these guys had..to end up broke...as Tony Tubbs said though "you always think there will be another payday"
A great book "the longest round" charts the fate of men who fought Tyson..Carl Williams before his death from cancer told a story of how he was a security guard at hotels in Vegas where he had previously been the headline act in bouts...what a comedown..imagine having to handle that...
Ty Biggs won tbe olympics fought Tyson for the title..ended up back home with his parents..same with Tubbs...Tony Tucker was living out of a suitcase in Florida training fighters on the 'toughman' circuit..this guy went the distance with Mikey and Lennox.

Depends on the fighters and how intelligent they were with their money, Holmes , Cooney, Leonard, Hagler seem to be doing well financially even as they are getting close to their 60's Holmes is already there...

Foreman has more loot than he can ever spend, Lennox Lewis is doing well, Vitali Klitchko has been retired for awhile i don't see him coming back for money, same with Oscar de la hoya, and Roy Jones jr, throw in Calzaghe too...

Too many fools pissed away their loot on buying too many cars, cmon really does anybody really need 15 cars, :-(, or buying a mansion the size of wal mart supercenter, like Holyfield:-( or does some idiot really need to walk around wearing a 200 thousand dollar diamond watch, or buy houses for everyone in your family, and support all of your leecehes and yes men and clowns that hang around you just to try and squeeze every last dime out of you, hell no...

I don't feel sorry at all for dummies that can't stop spending for **** they don't really need, the paydays will stop coming when you get in your 40's and can't fight anymore, if these guy's are too stupid to realize that, then they deserve what they get, the paydays will stop coming!!:deal

The vast majority of people who win the lottery, end up broke within a few years.
You simply cant out earn lack of financial acumen!

Is it a surprise when most of the top fighters come from rough backgrounds?? Just imagine what it's like to have nothing then suddenly you're mega rich!!

Getting hit in the head repeatedly by people trained specifically to do just that is not good for your health or your ability to make great decisions about your financial future.

    It works like this.

I run multiple 100 mile footraces every year, and we don’t really know the long term effect they have on your heart, but suspect that it isn’t good.

I engage in “trad climbing” which basically means securing the rope in the rock as you climb up, by putting metal wedges into cracks in the rock.

I have no desire whatsoever to be a professional boxer!

The skin cancer analogy is fairly close to the mark actually.

What do you make out of 9522 other than just another number?

Boxing is certainly a strange beast on occassion beguiling and enthralling but with some very dark corners, perhaps like the saying - Gun's Dont Kill People - People Kill People, - Boxing is what it is one of the last Klondikes for the Dice-thrower it takes Ordinary People and can put them into extraordinary circumstances, and if common sense is often parked at the gates of sound reasoning then it can be hijacked and towed away by those of vested interest..the Cheerleaders Ear whisperers and Agenda Merchants...Does the common man stand much of a chance to come out of the other end happy and unscathed..? particularly the long-Haulers..? The Last Bastion of the true fighting man has always been surrounded by a Minefield exhortation and exploitation, some self inflicted. The Noble Beast of the Noble Art beware.

I think that some governing body should keep say 10% of all fighters purses..until they retire..kept in a trust fund..fighters would sign to agree to this as part of turning pro..it would stop some ending up broke...at least initially ?
May stop some fighting beyond when its good for them.?
Dont think this is the worst idea ?

I agree , however the governing body should make the fighters wait 3 or 4 years AFTER they retire, to get their money, otherwise guys will retire then get their money then get right back in the ring.
