I will preface this post by saying I am not one of the people crying robbery after this weekend. I did score the fight 115-113 GGG, but I can easily see a draw and several of the rounds were close enough that I don’t think it’s that outrageous to have Canelo come out ahead. No, the purpose of this post and what I’ve been thinking of a lot the last couple of days is the curious case of Canelo and how “favoured” he is by judges and how seemingly accepted this is by the boxing world. I liked Canelo. I think the clen thing was likely an accident as his camp claimed, I think he is a superb boxer. Not only one of the best counter punchers in the sport, but as we saw this weekend capable of getting on the front foot and playing the aggressor against one of the best in the business. And yet...I am honestly starting to really hope someone knocks him clean out. Charlo, Jacobs, I don’t care who frankly. The number of times, and in fact the consistent regularity, of Canelo getting the rub of the green is actually quite disgusting and I can’t think of any other equivalent example in any other sport. Some boxing fans will cite Mayweather, but in my opinion other than Castillo 1 there weren’t really any other fights where he was truly lucky to get the rub of the green. Mayweather himself was also on the receiving end of a “Canelo special” judges card. I’ll also say I’m not one of the people who thought Trout or Lara beat Canelo, but those fights were certainly much closer than some of the cards would suggest. Cotto as well. It doesn’t even seem to be a case of Canelo having a certain style that judges like - he got clowned on by Floyd and one judge saw it as a draw, was outlanded and outpressured going backwards by GGG and two judges didn’t see what most saw, then was outlanded and (in my opinion anyway) hit with the better punches coming forwards against GGG and another two judges didn’t see what most saw. So I guess my question for you guys is: for how long do we accept this? And how exactly do Canelo’s biggest fans reconcile the fact that their favourite fighter is somehow given every close round in every close fight he has? It’s bad for the sport and actually I think it’s bad for Canelo’s legacy as well.
Agreed but do think he is an absolute cheat and liar. Something about him u just can't trust one word that he says. And forget about his promotors LOL I was a huge fan of Oscar the fighter but loath him as a promoter and from this day on will never watch another GB promoted fight. Canelo will always get the decision so until he gets KO'd or Golden boy wants to push another golden goose through, we will have to deal with this garbage, I'm just done paying for it atleast.
I see Canelo as Boxings number 1 villian these days. It used to be Floyd, it threatened to be Broner but for me Canelo and his whole disgusting team have become the new team money. That isnt a problem as such as Floyd was a big villian and he did ok out of running with it.
It's not that Canelo isn't a good fighter. He has some shady people around him and gets too many benefit of the doubt too many times. All because he brings the Mexicans. Is boxing a sport or a glorified marketing organization now?
When all is said and done, Canelo's legacy will suffer greatly from all of these gift decisions he's been given over the years and unlike other boxers whose legacies will forever be held dear in the minds of the fans, there will always be question marks hanging over Canelo's head and therefore discussion over whether or not he deserved certain victories will forever be ongoing, blemishing his legacy in ever greater degrees as time goes on. Canelo is a king in his own mind but it's clear the vast majority of fans believe he is but a pretender to the throne, nor will they forget how he usurped it from its rightful heir in such a deplorable way, thus disdain for Canelo will only grow as time goes on and eventually it will dawn on him that it would have been better he conceded both fights, that he might have retained his honor and forever be remembered a worthy challenger in the future, rather than a spineless cheat in whom no dignity could ever be found, which is not only how he will be remembered in the future but is generally how he is thought of already by most fans, which is a shame because for all the controversy surrounding him, he is still an elite boxer.
