    The Punch Stats debate

How many posters on here regularly use punch stats as an arguement for a fighter winning a fight?
I think most on here have used punch stats as some arguement, but how much do they count and is it a good format to use?
For round by round punch stats, I would say that in some cases, if there was no real drama in the round, that they could be used, but overall punch stats can be very misleading

Below is a fictitional fight with two fighters. Fighter A & B

Round 1. Fighter A lands 25 shots total and fighter B lands 5. Fighter A wins that round 10/9

Round 2. Fighter A lands 25 shots total and fighter B lands 10. Fighter A wins that round 10/9

Round 3. Fighter A lands 20 shots total and fighter B lands 10. Fighter A wins that round 10/9

So at this point Fighter A is 3 rounds up and the punch stats would favour him 70 to 25

Round 4. Fighter A lands a great one two, then another good one two, then lands another 6 shots for a total of 10 shots in that round and fighter B lands 7 shots, but badly hurts fighter A with his 2nd shot, then on his 5th shot heavily staggers fighter A and lands 2 damaging follow up shots. Fighter B wins that round 10/9 with his effective punches, but has landed less.

Round 5 Fighter A lands 10 shots and Fighter B lands 10 shots but Fighter B has landed the more telling cleaner shots and Fighter B wins the round 10/9

Round 6 Fighter A lands 15 shots and Fighter B lands 12 shots.
Neither fighter has really been damaging, but fighter A landed two 3 punch combos in the first minute with 9 shots landed over the next two minutes, whilst Fighter B over the next two minutes has landed his 12 shots.
Now many seem to forget the first minute or score based on the last 30 seconds, so Fighter B has been given that round 10/9, in a round that nobody has really found to be too contraversial overall

The fight is a 6 rounder and has finished as a draw where some felt fighter A deserved the victory and some fighter B.

So at the finish punch stats favour Fighter A 105 to 54

So do overall punch stats count for much? Do you feel round by round punch stats are important?

Discuss the importance of punch stats

nah, compubox is ****. just a couple ****s pressing a button whenever they think something landed, it's not trustworthy at all, very prone to error and corruption and fake results, i always dismiss any compubox stats, they're useless and they're always wrong anyway.

The silly thing is that anything that is not a jab is recorded as a "power punch" whether there's any power or not.

I think punch stats are useful in circumstances when both fighters have pretty even power and no one was really visibly hurt in that round.

Super important. Numbers don't lie usually. I use them often and to form predictions.

So do you feel punch stats are something that should be used?
Can you recall what punch stats you used to predict some fights?

I think punch stat is can help to suggest the activity of a match and punching strategy of the fighter if it is not televised. For example, punch stat would have been interesting for some of the legendary old fights. Also counting the number of jabs and body shots landed seems interesting when comparing numbers with the other fighter or to himself. So if a fighter normally lands 7 jabs per round but only land 4 in this match could explain the reason he is behind, etc.

Occasions where it is useful but sometimes misleading. Also 'fans' use it because that's the only thing they have in their favour, that is what puts proper fans off of the punch stats but the 'fans' are hypocritical when using the stats as they use the stats when it suits them or use bits of the stats to make it look better for their favoured fighter.

Not too keen on them myself.

A lot of people use them to suit their agenda. For example, troll poster ellerbe, he was talking about Dirrell v Froch and how Dirrell won because the punch stats showed he outlanded Froch (which of course, he probably made up because I don't think punch stats for that fight exist) but on the same page he also said Hopkins clearly beat Calzaghe. :nono Not according to punch stats. Pwning himself and identifying the real reason- the fighter with the same skin colour as him lost.

They can be used to back up an argument, but you shouldn't base it on that.

They're just for fun, I think most of the time the punch stats and how the fight went is correlational, but not always, especially if the fight is close. Punch stats alone don't give you the full picture.

    Do the judges use them?

well, this is why they have 'power punches' and jabs.. presumably 'power punches' are doing more damage.

There is a high correlation between higher punch stats and the winner so it is important data. having said this, i agree, it's not the full story.

The question is what are judges thinking?

    1. is this a fight and what matters is who is hurting the other more
    2. it's not really a fight, it's more of a skills exhibition - who lands more and shows more speed, skills, defense. Who's doing the most damage is irrelevant unless there is a stoppage

I think that there should be many 10-10 rounds. Can judges score rounds 10-10? i've never seen one but the business of having to give a round to one opponent because a draw isn't satisfying, is absolute BS. If two figurers barely do anything or if it's too close to call - score it 10-10, end of story.

Also, judges have to put more weight on the fighter pressing the action because if you had two defensive wizards dancing for 12 rounds, there wouldn't be a fight. Judges need to understand that the fighter pressing is taking the most risks and making the fight.

Numbers don't tell the whole story.
