I did that thread a while ago about Joey Maxim and how many extraordinary punchers he met and how he probably has one of the underrated chins of all time and one of the best. A fighter who is regularly admitted to such conversations is the mighty Kid Gavilan and in my head he probably met a better array of punchers. But when I actually started to look through his record, I'm not so sure... Gasper Ortega 22 rounds Peter Waterman 20 rounds Eduardo Lausse 22 rounds Ernie Durando 10 rounds Bobo Olsen 15 rounds Rafael Merentino 9 rounds Gil Tuner 11 rounds Ray Robinson 25 rounds Ike Williams 30 rounds Some monster punchers in there, Robinson, and Lausse especially, but there are some other brickbreakers in that little lot - but it wasn't, honestly, as impressive as I thought it would be. What do you think? Am I missing anyone? Who do you think met more great punchers out of he and Maxim? He did 45 rounds with Archie Moore. He did 20 rounds with Eddie Machen. He did 8 rounds with Floyd Patterson. He did 10 rounds with Danny Nardico. He did 13 rounds with Sugar Ray. He did 42 rounds with Ezzard Charles. He did 10 rounds with Freddie Mills. He did 10 rounds with Bob Satterfield. He did 30 rounds with Jersey Joe Walcott. He did 10 rounds with Lloyd Marshall. He did 21 rounds with Curtis Shephard.
Great topic (and nice to see Gaspar Ortega recognized for his pop). I think Maxim was more durable — you couldn’t hurt him with a 2x4 block of wood. And on balance I think he faced more dangerous punchers, although some like Jersey Joe weren’t sledgehammer hitters so much as precision snipers.
Many of these guys are definitely not big punchers (at least not at HW). And crediting Maxim for withstanding SRR ?!? I see SRR as the GOAT, but he was the smaller man here. How can you credit Maxim for surviving against a smaller man, who btw, embarrassed him and would have won if not for the heat ?!?
I think this is a pretty astounding list, really. A total of 47 rounds with two top five (or thereabouts) middleweight punchers, plus going 30 with the greatest lightweight puncher in history. Pretty mad record IMO. Although I probably wouldn't rate this list as high as I would Maxim's, I'd rate Gavilan's chin higher.
I thought it would have more guys on it. That's the thing that surprised me. In the end, he fought probably about as many punchers as someone like Lennox Lewis.
Yeah, you're right. Although when it comes to these sorts of things my philosophy is quality over quantity, but quantity still matters.
I agree. I think quality is more important too, much more important to be tested by three or four guys who could put anyone away who were also very skilled, but for some reason, in my head, KG had faced one of the biggest array of different punchers...it will be interesting to see how he compares when i do a few more of these. It will be interesting to see how many guys faced more power-punching tests than Maxim, think that might be a very short list.
Me too. Maxim was a tank, and I agree, I'm also a little surprised that Gavilan didn't do too well. I think if you'd have asked me a few weeks ago who faced more punchers between the two, I might well have just said it was roughly even off the top of my head. Obviously Ali will be up there, maybe Johnny Risko and Sam Langford. Young Peter Jackson?

It would be good if we could keep this thread about the punchers KG faced. Anyone think i missed a puncher? Anyone think any of these guys don't qualify?
Very interesting topic. Gavilan had an iron chin for sure, always think he should get a bit more credit than he does. Joey Maxim is another concrete head as well. If memory serves me correct Basilio was the only one that knocked Gavilan down, I believe with a left hook.
