The purses are why American guys aren't boxing as much.

Some purses that come to memory over the years and why people may not box as much:
Mike Jones v. Bailey each received 100K. Jones hasn’t fought since so after expenses, promoter fees, training expenses, manager fees, he took home less than a cop after overtime. Estimated 35K.
    Quintana(23K) v. Latimore(55K)
    Dallas (25K) v. Matthysse (225 K)
    Ortiz (800K) v. Lopez (80K)
    Rigondeaux(100K) v. Kennedy(70K)
    Ward 1.3 million v. Dawson (600K)
    Chavez Jr. (3Million) v. Martinez(1.5 million)

People look at the fighters receiving all the money but they will not. If they are lucky, they will get half. A guy like Lopez, Dallas, Lattimore, and Kennedy are not the best guys but I'd be willing to say they are better than 90% of guys who put on gloves every year. They have competed in the sport since they were kids, except Chavez Jr. and Martinez. If you are from a foreign country that is great money but in America, other jobs with less risk pay that much money and even more. If you are an athletic sixteen year old and 170 pounds, why box when basketball and football can get you much more in terms of education, which can be used to make more than many boxers, or become professional? Those sports require less strenuous activity too. For every Floyd and Manny, there are 5 or more Mike Dallas's who are making less than him.

its the fact that other sports are financially eclipsing boxing, which makes the payouts look so decrepit. Americans are used to seeing team athletes (baseball, basketball, football) making 10's of millions a year for pete's sakes! Even hockey, car racing, golfing athletes prob make more than 95% of the fighters.

Its all about sponsership and the ability to merchandise that brand that raises the money peg.... boxing hardly has that....

its these scumbag promoters, managers, and lawyers making all
the $$ and nobody even cares who these flesh merchants are.
They need to shrink boxing admin like they need to shrink federal
gov't in the US. until then, the working man will never prosper.

It's also much easier to go pro as a boxer/mma fighter than it is to go pro in other sports. There are no tryouts, no draft and no academy graduation required.

Granted, most fighters w/o name recognition or an extensive amateur background will fight for peanuts but there is still far less red tape involved in turning pro as a boxer or even an mma fighter.

I've read many articles which indicate UFC fighters are routinely less paid than the purses I hear boxers getting.

A college buddy was a scrub receiver on the Minnesota Vikings. He was making $500K/yr for warming the bench. Sergio Martinez when he fought Antonio Margarito made $500. If you're a good athlete in the USA, boxing is usually the last resort like Seth Mitchell who blew out both his knees so he couldn't go pro football.

El Gato fought Randall Bailey for a title eliminator and got $6K. He had 23 fights at the time.

JDS had 15 fights and got $200K for his last fight.

    It's boxings own fault.
Too many bull**** fights, and too much money into PPV fighters, and not enough to the next level(s) down.

It's easier. But also far more corrupt and the pay days will first come when you can compete for championships.
