I get a bit tired of hearing how "great" the "Murderers Row" is, I agree there was some serious talent there but only the best 3 of them I rate, the others are just good. So here I will name the group I regard as the REAL Murderers Row and I am sure no one will dispute my group as superior and greater and MORE DANGEROUS. Presuming this has to be about race but here goes. Peter Jackson Sam Langford Jack Johnson Sam McVey Joe Jeanette Harry Wills Joe Walcott Joe Gans Young Peter Jackson George Dixon Any arguments about this ? anyone like this ?
It's an impressive list of names, the problem with it is, as I understand it the MR were a list of black fighters that for one reason or another were denied a title opportunity. That would automatically DSQ Johnson Gans Walcott Dixon The other snag is the term"Legit" , this implies that fighters of the calibre of: Burley Williams Marshall Bivins And the others were not really that special. I've no doubt that some were better than others but they shared a lot of wins amongst themselves.Whether they were always going full out I have my doubts,[ as I do regarding the bona fides of all the fights Wills,McVey Langford ,Jeannette had in their round robins]. I'd prefer your list to be named " The First Murderers Row" and for you to take off those who won titles and perhaps replace them with both George Godfrey's,Denver Ed Martin, and whichever of the later black guys you prefer .Guys like Cocoa Kid Elmer Ray etc but it's your list and your thread:good
Some fair and good points there mate, I don't doubt the murderers row were good, even great in the case of Burley (but no more than say, Billy Graham) but I do think they feature too high above some more worthy fighters
No one is disputing that this is a list that includes some truly all-time great fighters and could be called a "Murderers' Row" in its own right, but most of them have much more of an opportunity to get world title shots or lucrative bouts compared to the fighters of the 1940s "Murderers' Row." You seem to think that the likes of Charley Burley, Holman Williams, Eddie Booker, Archie Moore, Lloyd Marshall, Cocoa Kid, Jack Chase, Aaron "Little Tiger" Wade and Bert Lytell weren't that good, but we can agree to disagree. The qualitative depth in the 1940s Murderers' Row group was truly astounding, and it is very sad that so many of them didn't get chances commensurate with their considerable abilities and accomplishments. We know what happened when Moore finally got his chances, so there is a huge "what if" factor in regards to the rest of the members of the 1940s Murderers' Row. - Chuck Johnston
Les Darcy for one, but don't include Moore he was a world champ but i would rate Darcy above him at MW. I would also rate Tommy Ryan above them. there's two I also think both of them beat those guys head to head also they are more legendary than they are. Bivins is good but not in Burley or Williams class, Marshall I need to look into.
Just looked into Marshall and seriously he isn't top 25 material, his losses arebad, some real average guys beat him, Bobe Olsen was not as good as Sands yet he beats Marshall ? Mate the guy has been KO'd ELEVEN TIMES Darcy wasn't even dropped to the canvas his entire career, a Ko loss or three can be forgivable but 11 ?......... He lost fights to Olsen, ****ell, Matthews, an unknown called Conny Rux and KO'd, Grant Butcher ???? Butcher was a complete novice, Roy taylor, Oakland Billy Smith, Shorty Hogue, Ceferino Garcia, Johnny Romero. He lost to some big names like Moore and Charles, lost to Chase , Booker, Williams, Yarosz, to lose to them is understandable but to be great MUST beat the majority of them, yes he won a few against good names but how do you explain his losses without making bad excuses and looking like a fanboy... I am not having a go at you, for all I know you may have not closely checked his record, it is far worse than Zale's btw. I am very sorry, he was a tough, brave guy but I can't even put him in my top 40 MW's.... period, Marshall is not Hall of Fame material nor an ATG nor a legend.
I have to off the top of my head put all these guys ahead of Lloyd Marshall. Tommy Ryan, SRR, Burley, Darcy, Williams, Moore, Ron Richards, Dave Sands, Eddie McGoorty, Jeff Smith, Ezzard Charles, Stanley Ketchell, Hagler, Hearns, SRL, Greb, Walker, Golovkin, RJJr, Hopkins, Monzon, Basilio, Olsen, Pender, Fullmer, Nonpareil, Fitzsimmons, hell Tony Mundine sr is better, Garcia, Klaus, Papke, hell anyone who ever held a MW title really and then some.
Oh yeah sorry mr Mike Gibbons you would surely beat Marshall to death. I reckon Dillon and Tommy Gibbons would too.
Marshall was managed by the Mob I think that explains some of his more surprising losses, plus his chin let him down on occasion.
Now seeing as I have pointed out all the bad about Marshall it is only fair now that I point out the positives, lloyd as I said was brave, big cahunas etc. Here he is beating Freddie Mills https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-PtbswvJbs here we can see that Marshall has plenty of power and is a great attacker. I love this fight, it is a fight to a knockout, either way this fight ain't going the distance. Lloyd has speed as well so looking at this I wonder why he loses so many fights and the answer is obvious, his defence is sadly not great, Mills although getting knocked down a few times and KO'd he does rock Marshall with some big shots of his own, simply put, Mills gets too many shots in and it is only the fact that Marshall gets in more big shots..... the first one is a absolutely beautiful left hook,,,, yes this guy is certainly a good fighter, maybe he should have retired a couple of years earlier, he is one of the dangerous fighters in his time which quite frankly is all that most mere mortals can expect, to be a great however needs more, need to be a top three or four guy in your prime, I don't think he is that but oh boy, you better think hard before taking him on, he has some big power, some speed and a great left hook and that makes for trouble. I believe that if he had a great defense then his record would be far better, then I couldn't imagine Olsen or Cokkell ever getting near the guy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXDitbm6CRA Great KO but he almost went down just before it so he decides to end this guy and you can see the crowd is not quite happy but Lloyd shows his great class as a man when he assists his victim to the corner and I can see that Lloyd is quite concerned, a nice guy for sure.
